Here is what the Pens had to say about tonight's grudge matchup against the NY Rangers at Madison Square Garden…
ON THE SHOWDOWN
Crosby: "You look at these games as good challenges and good matchups. Obviously they mean a lot because it's within the division. You expect to be at your best for those games. You want to make sure you're playing the right way. Whether we lost or won (Monday) you go in with the same mindset. Maybe a little more desperate hopefully."
ON NEW YORK'S 5-2 WIN ON MONDAY
Sullivan: "It was a very close game. It was a much closer game than the score indicated. The scoring chances were an indication of that. We had opportunities, high-quality opportunities to score. It didn't go our way."
Crosby: "We made a few mistakes that ended up in the back of our net. They also got some bounces. We had chances that we could have probably put the game away at different times but hit posts or missed really good opportunities. That was the difference in the game."
Kessel: "It was a tight game. There were a couple good bounces. That's how it goes. We had chances to score. It was a pretty solid game all around."
ON THE RANGERS TRANSITION GAME
Sullivan: "I think it's improved. They've added some foot speed to their lineup. They changed their style of play a little bit. They're playing a similar style of play that we're playing. It's something we're aware of. We have to make good decisions with the puck and stay on the right side of people, and work to get above the puck as often as we can so they have to come through numbers."
Crosby: "I think every team is trying to play fast right now. You can see that they're trying to be aggressive with their D. They've added some guys that can skate. I think their whole mindset is to be aggressive, play quick and have their D join the rush. Their D joining and transition is a big part of their game."
ON THE DEFENSIVE PAIR CHANGES
Sullivan: "Sometimes if we can make an adjustment to a defense pair it can change the dynamic a little bit that may help one or two of the players involved."
Letang: "It doesn't really matter. (Olli and I) played well together last year. We're trying different things, different combinations. I'm comfortable with Olli. I'm comfortable with everybody out there."
ODDS AND ENDS
Sullivan on more scoring balance: "Our team has shown an ability to be more productive 5-on-5 and it has to come throughout the lineup. It's not on any one particular guy; it's the group. That's been the strength of this team. We have to work toward developing that strength again."
Kessel on dealing with injuries: "Everyone has to step up throughout the year. Guys get hurt or banged up. I think that's why we have the depth that we have."
