Power Play Tournament a Success

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins
The 3rd annual Penguins Power Play Street Hockey Tournament drew the event’s biggest turnout to date, attracting 49 teams and nearly 450 players to Greater Pittsburgh Dekhockey Nov. 1-2. The event was sanctioned by the Penguins and administered by Street Hockey USA.

Ryan Whitney attended the Youth 7-9 championship game (won by Murrysville over Butler, 4-0). The affable Penguins defenseman signed autographs and shook hands while contributing a big-league feel to the tournament.

“I can’t believe how good these kids are,” said Whitney. “One goal [Murrysville] scored was sick. It was good hockey, and I enjoyed watching it.”

Said tournament director Mark Madden, “I’ve been involved with street hockey tournaments for almost 30 years, and this was one of the best ever. The 4-on-4 format, the tiebreaking shootouts, the various age and skill levels – this tournament had something for everybody.

“I’d like to thank the Penguins, particularly Dave Soltesz, the vice president of sales and marketing, for helping publicize the tournament and contributing some great prizes. The staff and ownership of Greater Pittsburgh Dekhockey pitched in, as did the rink’s youth program. It really is a first-class facility. It was fantastic that Ryan Whitney came out. It was a great thrill for the kids.

“And of course, I want to thank all the teams and players. It was a very easy tournament to run.”

The Penguins Power Play Street Hockey Tournament raised over $4,000 for Hockey In the ‘Hood, the Penguins’ program that brings hockey to disadvantaged inner-city youths. For more information, visit hockeyinthehood.com.
