by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins
Shattuck St. Mary’s of Minnesota, the hockey powerhouse that helped produce such NHL stars as Sidney Crosby, Zach Parise and Ryan Malone, will be one of 12 teams competing for the USA Hockey 18-and under National Championship April 1-5 at RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island.

The Pittsburgh Hornets will be competing as the host team in the Tier I tournament, along with the Shattuck St. Mary’s, Detroit Little Caesar’s, the Boston Junior Bruins, the Philadelphia Junior Flyers and the Los Angeles Junior Kings.

“It will be another great week for Pittsburgh hockey when all these tremendous young athletes take the ice to play for the national championship,” said Pittsburgh Penguins president David Morehouse. “We encourage all of our fans to support this unique event and enjoy some tremendous hockey, watching the stars of the future.”

Shattuck St. Mary’s features three players ranked by NHL Central Scouting for the 2009 NHL Draft – Erik Haula, ranked no. 55 in North America; Alexander Fallstrom, ranked no. 84; and Kirill Gotovets, ranked no. 118.

The Pittsburgh Hornets are led by 16-year-old J.T. Miller, who will play next season for the U.S. National Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich.

There also will be a Tier II tournament, with Pittsburgh’s Arctic Foxes competing.
