It's official: the Penguins have the 14th overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft, set for June 28-29 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

This will be their highest pick since 2012, when Pittsburgh - serving as the host city - acquired the eighth overall pick from Carolina just moments before going on the clock.

Going into the NHL Draft Lottery, which determined the order of selection for the first 16 slots of the NHL Draft, the Penguins did not have a chance of landing the first overall selection and the right to draft future generational talent Connor Bedard. That honor went to the Chicago Blackhawks, who entered the event with the second-best odds behind the Anaheim Ducks.

Instead, the highest Pittsburgh could have ultimately picked if they had "won" the draft lottery was fourth overall, due to recent rule changes that only allow teams to go up a maximum of 10 slots. Instead, as expected, they stayed at 14th, as they had the third-best record of the participating teams. Here's how it all played out:

As of now, Pittsburgh has six total selections in the 2023 NHL Draft. In addition to their first-round pick, the Penguins have a third-round pick (94th overall); a fifth-round pick (142nd overall); a sixth-round pick (174th overall); and two seventh-round picks (209th and 221st overall).
