Pens vs. Thrashers Live Game Blog

Penguins representatives will be providing a live-game blog during Penguins' games this season. Check back for updates, injury reports and information throughout the game.


7:30 PM: Tonight's healthy scratches for Pittsburgh are defensemen Hal Gill and Alex Goligoski, and forward Tim Wallace. Atlanta healthy scratches are defenseman Zach Bogosian and forward Bryan Little.

7:38 PM: After having a backhand shot denied by Atlanta goalie Kari Lehtonen, Ruslan Fedotenko sparred with former Penguin Colby Armstrong at center ice. Fedotenko took him down almost right off the bat. Both were sent to the box for five minutes.

Shots so far: Pittsburgh 4, Atlanta 0.

7:44 PM: Maxime Talbot sent the puck through the Thrashers' crease and the crowd gasped, but no one was there to put it in.

7:46 PM: Tyler Kennedy is trying to work some chemistry on his new line with Sidney Crosby. Kennedy was elevated to the top line last game against the Rangers. Crosby is sent to the box for a 4 min. high sticking penalty.

7:47 PM: Fleury slid to his right and stopped Kovalchuk's one-timer from 20 feet out. It was Atlanta's first shot of the game. The Pens clear the puck out of the zone with 2:44 left on Crosby's penalty.

7:49 PM: Ryan Whitney has a short handed attempt which hits the post. 1:27 left on Crosby's penalty.

7:51 PM: Fleury makes a great save on a shot from Ilya Kovalchuk.

7:53 PM: Atlanta's Colby Armstrong is sent to the box for holding Crosby down on the ice in the left corner behind the Thrashers net. The Penguins go on the power play with 10:54 in the period. Shots are at Penguins 5, Thrashers 4.

7:59 PM: The power play expires with no luck for the Penguins. They did get three shots off on the power play.

8:03 PM: Whitney takes a shot from the point that Lehtonen snags in his glove. After the faceoff Malkin took a shot from a tough angle at the crease but Lehtonen made the save and the puck was sent out of the zone.

8:06 PM: Pascal Dupuis passes the puck from the hashmarks to Tyler Kennedy who took a wrist shot from the near circle. Again Lehtonen made the save. Atlanta's Niclas Havelid takes a two-minute tripping minor.

8:10 PM: Penguins score on the Power Play! Petr Sykora re-directs Ryan Whitney's shot from the point. Malkin first battled for the puck behind the net and passed it out to Whitney.

Score: Penguins 1, Thrashers 0.

8:13 PM: End of period 1. The Penguins finally scored on the Power play after going 0-33 on power play attempts. Shots at the end of the period: Pittsburgh 14, Atlanta 5.

8:29 PM: The Penguins return from the locker room to begin the second period.

8:33 PM: Staal carried the puck through the Atlanta crease but couldn't get a shot off.
Tonight's attendance: 16,975 a standing room only sell-out. The Penguins 86th straight sell-out.

8:35 PM: Fleury blocks a shot with his left shoulder. Shots so far the game are: Pittsburgh 14, Atlanta 7.

8:40 PM: Staal had a great shift, working the puck behind Atlanta's net he passed the puck up to Matt Cooke who couldn't get a shot off.

8:47 PM: The Staal-Cooke-Jeffrey line had a great shift, they kept the puck in Atlanta's zone, cycled it along the boards, and utilized their defensemen well. It almost looked like they were on the power play.

8:50 PM: Malkin created  a turnover that gave the Penguins a three-on-two advantage. Malkin skated the puck in and set up Satan for a one-timer from the top of the far crease. Lehtonen made a glove save.

8:54 PM: Penguins score again. Malkin took the puck toward the crease after the faceoff in the near circle and passed the puck in front of the net to Sykora, who backhanded it into the net.

Score: Penguins 2, Thrashers 0.

8:57 PM:
 Pens go on the power play again. Niclas Havelid goes off for two minutes for hooking.

9:00 PM: Pens score again on the power play. Crosby tipped in Malkin's shot from the point. The shot was so fast it was difficult to tell Crosby tipped it at first. The goal is  Crosby's 16th of the season and first in eight games.

9:06 PM: The Penguins head to the locker room for the second intermission. Shots in the game so far: Pittsburgh 22, Atlanta 14. The score after two: Penguins 3, Thrashers 0.
Pascal Dupuis and Ruslan Fedotenko both left the game with undisclosed injuries. Neither is likely to return for the third period.

9:27 PM:
 Kovalchuk takes a shot right in front of the Penguins net that Fleury stops cold. The shot had the Mellon Arena crowd gasping.

9:30 PM: The crowd ardently boo's Atlanta's Boris Valabik, who collided with Crosby near the Penguin's blue line. Valabik lost his stick in the collision and Eric Godard skated over to police the situation on behalf of his teammate.

9:33 PM: Atlanta gets three chances down low but Fleury stops all three shots. The Thrashers take the lead in shots for the first time in the game. Shots so far in the game: Atlanta 24, Pittsburgh 23.

9:34 PM: Crosby skates the puck up center ice and passes the puck to Staal as they both skate into the zone. Staal returned the pass to Crosby who re-directed it towards the net but the shot went wide.

9:39 PM: Boris Valabik gets two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Pens get another power-play chance. They play Malkin, Crosby, Sykora, Whitney and Boucher.

9:43 PM: Todd White gets two minutes for holding. The Pens have a five-on-three advantage.

9:43 PM: Whitney gets two minutes for slashing. The teams play four-on-four.

9:45 PM: White returns to the ice. The Pens go on the penalty kill.

9:46 PM: Thrashers score on the power play. Kovalchuk takes a shot through traffic from the point which beats Fleury.

Score: Penguins 3, Thrashers 1.

9:49 PM: Kris Letang gets two minutes for hooking. The Pens go back on the penalty kill with 4:14 left in the third. Shots so far in the game: Atlanta 28, Pittsburgh 27.

9:53 PM: Cooke clears the puck out of the zone and the Pens kill off the last of Letang's penalty. Shots are tied at 28-28.

9:56 PM: Talbot and Vyacheslav Kozlov (try saying that name ten times fast) shove each other around a bit at the Thrashers' blue line but they don't get into a fight. The game goes into the final minute and the crowd heartily cheers.

9:58 PM: Vyacheslav Kozlov goes to the box for cross checking. The Penguins go on the power play for the last minute of the period.

9:59 PM: The Penguins win the game 3-1! Fleury lifts his hands in celebration and the team skates onto the ice to congratulate him.

Final Score:
Penguins 3, Thrashers 1.
Final shots: Pittsburgh 29, Atlanta 28.
