9:57 PM: The Penguins surpass the Islanders with Sykora's lone goal to grab two very important points in their chase for the post season.

3 Stars of the game:

1. Marc-Andre Fleury

2. Petr Sykora

3. Yann Danis

9:53 PM: The Penguins score the first goal of the game with just 2:23 left on the clock! Malkin and Gonchar were both above the near circle, Gonchar had the puck, and Malkin set up a sort of screen on the play which might have thrown off the Islanders defense. Gonchar took a shot on net which bounced out of the crease right onto Sykora's stick who was waiting in front of the net. Sykora scooped it past Yann Danis for the lone score of the game. Penguins 1, Islanders 0.

9:36 PM: Finally a bit of excitement as Malkin takes a shot from the top of the far circle that bounces off of the cross-bar just shy of the goal line. At first it looked like a goal, but after a second look the puck clearly didn't cross the line. The play was enough to energize the crowd though.

9:19 PM: The puck drops and the third period begins. Staal, Kennedy and Satan start the period off for the Pens. Eaton and Letang start on defense.

9:02 PM: The game is still scoreless after two. The Pens lead the Islanders in shots, 18-17, so far in the game. Let's hope they come out strong in the third period!

8:56 PM: After 16 minutes of play in the second period the game is still scoreless. Hopefully the Pens can generate something before the period ends.

8:27: We're ready to drop the puck for the second period. Hopefully, the Penguins get a few goals in this frame. In an out-of-town score, the NY Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs are tied, 0-0, at the end of the first period at Air Canada Centre.

8:09 PM: The Pens and Islanders head to their dressing rooms for the first intermission. The Penguins outshot the Islanders, 8-6, in the first period.

7:50: Pens.com would like to give props to North Allegheny goaltender Lindsay Holdcroft, who was one of four honored as the Highmark High School Player of the Month. Holdcroft had a 2.00 goals against average in eight games and is the first female to recieve the award in its 16-year history.

7:40: The Penguins made a few line changes in Crosby's absence. Maxime Talbot is centering a line between Ruslan Fedotenko and Matt Cooke. Jordan Staal played with Tyler Kennedy and Chris Minard. Miroslav Satan took Crosby's shift on the No. 1 power-play unit.

7:36: Jeff Jimmerson sang the "National Anthem." He is a rock star in Pittsburgh. A cult figure, adorred by Penguins fans. It shows with the huge ovation he receives whenever his name is announced.

7:32: The Penguins are moments away from taking on the NY Islanders at Mellon Arena in an important battle for Pittsburgh's postseason aspirations. The Penguins will not have center Sidney Crosby or defenseman Ryan Whitney in the lineup.

Crosby tweaked his groin in the Penguins' game against Washington on Sunday. He left practice Tuesday due to soreness. He tested it in today's morning skate but was unable play. Whitney has left the team and returned to Boston to take care of a family matter.

Janne Pesonen, recalled this afternoon from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, will also not play for Pittsburgh. He is the only healthy scratch for the team.

The Islanders scratched former Penguin Richard Park.
