10:00 PM: Though the Penguins made a valiant attempt to come back in the final few minutes, the Hurricanes win the game. Final score:

Hurricanes 2, Penguins 1.

9:57 PM: The Pens pull Fleury with a minute left.

9:53 PM: Tim Gleason goes to the box for high-sticking Malkin behind Carolina's net. The Penguins get a four-minute chance to tie the game.

9:50 PM: Crosby drops a pass to Sykora who shoots the puck from above the slot but Ward blocks the shot and holds onto it.

9:48 PM: The Mellon Arena crowd cheers loudly in an attempt to get the Penguins fired up.

9:34 PM: The Rangers beat the Ducks with a final score of 4-2 at Madison Square Garden.

9:26 PM: The third period begins with the Penguins on the power play. The Mellon Arena crowd of 16,972 is chanting, "Let's Go Pens!"

9:09 PM: The second period ends with the Hurricanes outshooting the Penguins 17-10 in the period. Total shot in the game are Hurricanes 32, Penguins 24.

8:54 PM: In the only other Atlantic Division game tonight, the Rangers are tied 2-2 with the Ducks going into the third period.

8:46 PM: The Hurricanes take the lead. Eric Staal (Jordan Staal's older brother) finds some space in the crease and slips a pass from Sergei Samsonov past Fleury for the point.

Hurricanes 2, Penguins 1.

8:34 PM: The second period begins.

8:16 PM: The first period ends with the score tied at 1-1.

8:05 PM: The Hurricanes tie the game with a power-play goal. Ray Whitney put in a shot from the top of the near circle. Fleury was screened by Tuomo Ruutu and the shot was re-directed off of Ryan Whitney's stick (who is not related to Ray Whitney by the way).

Penguins 1, Hurricanes 1. 

7:54 PM: The Mellon crowd applauds 8-year-old Jacob Anderson, who signed a one-day contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of the granting of the Make-A-Wish Foundation's 10,000th wish (check back to www.PittsburghPenguins.com on Wednesday for a full story and details on Anderson's day as a Penguin).

7:42 PM: The Penguins are happy to take an early lead in the game. Malkin gets possession of the puck just behind the Hurricanes' net and slips it past Ward who seemed unaware that Malkin had the puck. The Pens score the first goal for the fourth straight game.

Penguins 1, Hurricanes 0.

7:41 PM: Crosby returns to the ice in spectacular fashion, setting up Miroslav Satan with a pass in the slot, but Satan is unable to get a shot off but he did draw a penalty.

7:38 PM: Crosby leaves the ice and skates to the bench after blocking a shot with his mid-section.

7:30 PM:
 The Penguins go into tonight's match with the Carolina Hurricanes looking for their third consecutive win. The Pens are currently ranked ninth in the Eastern Conference while the Hurricanes are in 10th place.

Scratches for the Penguins are forward Pascal Dupuis and defensemen Alex Goligoski and Brooks Orpik. Marc-Andre Fleury is making his 10th straight appearance and ninth start in that span.

Scratches for Carolina are forward Wade Brookbank and defenseman Frantisek Kaberie. Cam Ward will start in net for the Hurricanes. He made 35 saves yesterday in the Hurricanes victory in Toronto.
