9:27 PM: That's a wrap and the Penguins tie the series at 2-2 as it heads back to Washington tomorrow. The final score was Penguins 5, Capitals 3.
9:24 PM: The Caps pull Varlamov for the last two minutes of play.
9:19 PM: The Penguins net a two-goal lead for the third time in this game. Fedotenko freed the puck up in the Penguins' end and sent it up the far boards. Talbot chased the puck down and used his speed to surpass the Washington defense as he released a shot that beat Varlamov on the the stick side. Penguins 5, Capitals 3.
9:16 PM: Eaton makes a great defensive play to keep Ovechkin from getting a shot off in the Penguins end. He simply skated with the speedy forward and kept his stick on him.
9:07 PM: Washington nets a short-handed goal as Orpik was shoved into the net, Jurcina launched a shot from the far point which surpassed the distracted Penguins for the point. Penguins 4, Capitals 3.
9:00 PM: The Pens again up their lead to two goals. They say patience is a virtue and it's certainly the virtue that Satan demonstrated on the play as he skated the puck into Washington's zone and patiently held onto it, coaxing Erskine down the ice, until Satan released a perfect pass between Erskine's legs and onto the stick of Sidney Crosby. Varlamov was also tricked by Satan's patience, and was out of position as Crosby received the pass and sent it into the empty cage. Penguins 4, Capitals 2.
8:55 PM: The Pens successfully kill off the remainder of Scuderi's penalty assessed at the end of the second period.
8:54 PM: OK, 20 minutes of regulation to go, and the Pens have a one-goal lead. The puck drops to begin the third period.
8:37 PM: The second period finally ends and the Pens will return once again on the penalty kill. The Penguins lead shots overall, 17-15.
8:30 PM: The Capitals cut the Penguins' lead to 3-2 with the help of Mike Green. Green carried the puck through the slot and released a shot from below the near circle. His shot rolled over Fleury's right shoulder and Clark poked it in for the point. Penguins 3, Capitals 2.
8:16 PM: The word on Gonchar now is that his return is questionable.
8:14 PM: Oddly enough, shots so far this period match the score: Penguins 3, Capitals 1. The Pens are looking sharp and are maintaining possession and limiting Capital's chances.
8:05 PM: The second period begins with the Penguins on the penalty kill, which they successfully kill off.
7:48 PM: That concludes the first period of play. The Penguins outshot the Capitals, 13-10, in that period and they also maintained possession of the puck for a majority of the period. Still no word on Gonchar's status.
7:44 PM: Staal and Kunitz sandwich Shaone Morrisonn behind the Capitals' net and the crowd goes wild.
7:42 PM: The Penguins score a goal during four-on-four play to take a 3-1 lead. Fedotenko picked up the puck in the neutral zone and skated down the slot. He released a shot from the high slot which bounded over the top of Varlamov's glove and into the net. Penguins 3, Capitals 1.
7:37 PM: Gonchar takes a bad knee-to-knee hit from Ovechkin in the corner and Ovechkin gets a minor penalty for the stunt. The hit left Gonchar on the ice for a bit and he is now in the dressing room. We'll keep you posted on his status as we find out more details.
7:32 PM: The Penguins take the lead! Guerin chipped a pass from the blueline out to Crosby who was jetting down the slot. Crosby lifted a shot on net but was denied by Varlamov on the initial shot and the rebound. Luckily Guerin was in front of the net to lift the puck over a grasping Varlamov. Penguins 2, Capitals 1.
7:30: Fleury makes a spectacular diving glove save to deny Federov.
7:20 PM: The Penguins have collected themselves and are starting to gain momentum. By the way the Penguins scratches tonight are forwards Petr Sykora, Eric Godard and defenseman Philippe Boucher. Scratches for Washington are Eric Fehr, Jeff Schultz, Donald Brashear, Tyler Sloan and Michael Nylander.
7:17 PM: The Penguins tie the score with a power-play goal. The Penguins talked about execution going into this game, and that's exactly what they did with their first man-advantage of the game. Gonchar skated the puck into Washington's zone and rifled a shot past Jurcina and Varlamov for the point - what a shot, what a goal! Penguins 1, Capitals 1.
7:11 PM: The Capitals take the early lead in this game with a quick goal from Backstrom. Backstrom released a shot from the top of the near circle which slipped under the left leg pad of Fleury. Capitals 1, Penguins 0.
7:10 PM: The puck drops and Crosby and Malkin start on the same line for the first shift of this game.
7:06 PM: We arrive at Game 4 in what is being heralded as one of the most entertaining NHL playoff series'. The Penguins trail the Capitals 2-1 going into tonight's game. Historically, the Penguins are 17-24 all-time in Game 4 playoff games.
The Mellon Arena crowd is pumped up and loudly welcoming the Penguins to the ice.
