10:08 PM: The Penguins score and win the game! Letang nets a goal off of a face-off for a much deserved win! Final Score: Penguins 3, Capitals 2.
10:02 PM: The Penguins are keeping the pressure on Varlamov - sooner or later something has to break through.
9:52 PM: The Caps shoot the puck out of play and earn a delay of game penalty. Perhaps the Penguins can take advantage of the power-play chance.
9:49 PM: The puck drops and over time begins.
9:33 PM: The game is headed to over time. The Penguins outshot the Capitals, 11-6, in the third period.
9:30 PM: The Caps tie the score with a power-play goal. Backstrom, from the goal line, banked a puck off of the back of Fleury's leg for the goal. Penguins 2, Capitals 2.
9:23 PM: Malkin scores!!!!! He shoots from the high slot and his wrist shot surpasses Varlamov for the power-play goal. Penguins 2, Capitals 1.
9:16 PM: Malkin, Kunitz and Guerin take a turn together and create a couple of quality scoring chances.
9:05 PM: Fedotenko earns a breakaway but his shot is denied by Varlamov.
9:02 PM: Dupuis almost nets a goal, but the puck deflects off of Varlamov and just inches past the pipes.
8:57 PM: The Penguins begin the third period with a man-advantage.
8:39 PM: Time flies when you're having fun and the Penguins look like they are having a blast out there as the second period expires. The Penguins outshot the Capitals, 15-4, in the period.
8:32 PM: Wow, the Pens look great! Shots favor Pittsburgh, 9-4, so far this period. They just keep peppering Varlamov with shots.
8:27 PM: Play resumes as Federov is returned to the Caps bench.
8:26 PM: Play stops as Sergei Federov is down on the ice in the near corner of the Penguins end. He skates to the bench clutching his arm.
8:18 PM: The Penguins get on the board with a goal from Ruslan Fedotenko! Fedotenko took the puck away in the Penguins end and skated down the ice on a two-on-one with Talbot. Fedotenko attempted to pass the puck across the slot to Talbot and his pass bounced off of the stick of the defender and back onto his own stick. Fedotenko landed the rebound behind Varlamov for the point. Penguins 1, Capitals 1.
8:09 PM: The Pens maintain possession of the puck for the majority of the first five minutes in this frame, but despite several great chances nothing conspires.
8:03 PM: The puck drops to start the second period.
7:45 PM: The first period is already over and the Pens will start the second period on the power play. Shots are tied at 8-8.
7:43 PM: Crosby skates into the Caps' zone, splits the defense and gets a quality shot on net but Varlamov denies him. Before Kunitz could pound in the rebound the net was knocked off and Washington received a penalty for the stunt which was billed as a delay of game.
7:41 PM: Malkin manages a breakaway but is stopped by Varlamov.
7:40 PM: Varlamov is once again proving to be sharp in net and has already stopped three great scoring chances from the Pens. Shots are tied at 5-5.
7:28 PM: The Penguins' penalty kill unit looks sharp as it kills off the first penalty of the game and limits the Caps to just one shot in the two minutes.
7:12 PM: The Capitals net an early goal on an odd play. Fleury lost his stick and went behind the net to retrieve it when an odd bounce left the puck on the stick of none other than Alex Ovechkin in the slot. Ovechkin buried the puck in the empty cage for the goal. Capitals 1, Penguins 0.
7:10 PM: The puck drops and the action gets underway.
7:09 PM: We're here at Mellon Arena for Game 3 of the best-of-seven series between the Penguins and Capitals. The crowd is fired up and looks intimidating all in white.
The Penguins are starting with Marc-Andre Fleury in net and have scratched forwards Petr Sykora and Eric Godard and defenseman Philippe Boucher, which means forward Miroslav Satan and defenseman Kris Letang will be playing.
Simeon Varlamov is starting in net for the Capitals. Scratches for the Caps are forwards Eric Fehr and Donald Brashear (suspension) and defensemen John Erskine, Karl Alzner, Jeff Schultz.
