The Penguins are no strangers to playing outdoor hockey. They’ve been a part of two Winter Classics (at Buffalo in Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008; vs. Washington in Heinz Field in 2011).
On March 1 Pittsburgh will play their third outdoor game against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field as part of the NHL’s Stadium Series.
On Friday afternoon, the Penguins – with the help of Chris Kunitz – unveiled their official Stadium Series jersey.
"I like the logo with the silver accent and metallic look," said jersey model Kunitz. "It has a different kind of fit with the striping. The socks and pants all tie into one. It's a good look. It keeps the original in tact, but changed enough to play in an outdoor game."
The jersey features a chrome-treated Penguins logo design inspired from the chrome details of the NHL shield, a dynamic and modern look to conventional team identity.
Numbering on the back of the jerseys is enlarged and sleeve numbers are angled to improve visibility in outdoor venues.
The Penguins’ Stadium Series jersey was designed with creative input from the team, Reebok and the NHL. Fans can pre-order the jersey in-person at the PensGear Team Store in CONSOL Energy Center for delivery in January.
