Pens to Practice at ‘Penguins Pond’ Outdoor Rink Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 11 a.m.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will take a practice session outdoors when they skate at “Penguins Pond at SouthSide Works” on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 11 a.m.

“Our players and coaches always appreciate the opportunity to take the game back to its roots,” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. “It will be a unique practice session, and it should be fun for all involved.”

Because of limited seating capacity, the Penguins are holding a contest on their Facebook page,, where fans can enter to win free tickets. 100 lucky fans will win two tickets each – for a total of 200 tickets. The contest ends Monday, Dec. 19 at noon. Only those with tickets will be able to attend the practice.

The outdoor rink, a legacy of last year’s NHL Winter Classic, is located at the intersection of 26th and Sidney Streets in the SouthSide Works complex.

“Penguins Pond at SouthSide Works, presented by Highmark” operates daily through Jan. 8. Public skating is available every day, and groups of 20 or more also may reserve the ice for skating and/or hockey.

There are several other special events schedule for the week before Christmas.

On Monday, Dec. 19, the Penguins will hold “Skate With The Greats” at 5 p.m. an opportunity to skate with Pens alums Bryan Trottier, Mark Recchi, Phil Bourque, Jay Caufield and others. The event already is sold out.

There also will be a series of high school hockey games, including:

Monday, Dec. 19
Moon vs. West Allegheny, 9 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 20
Bethel Park vs. Thomas Jefferson (freshmen). 7 p.m.
Hampton vs. Burrell (freshmen), 8:20 p.m.
Hampton vs. Burrell (JV), 9:40 p.m.

Wednesday, Dec. 21
Indiana vs. Kiski Area (freshmen), 7 p.m.
Fox Chapel vs. Plum (freshmen), 8:20 p.m.
Plum vs. Seneca Valley (JV), 9:40 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 22
Bethel Park vs. Fox Chapel, 9 p.m.

Daily public skating will be $7 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. Skate rental is $3. Groups of 20 or more may reserve the ice by calling 412.877.6475.
