That'll do it for OT. Both teams put forth stupendous efforts to no avail. We're going to the shootout!3:33:
Clowe came out of the corner and found himself going in alone on Fleury, but the Pens netminder denies him!5:00:
Extra period has commenced! Don't forget the teams skate 4-on-4 during OT per NHL rules.
We're going to overtime!2:11:

Man, Sharks tie it up. Michal Handzus carries the puck behind the net, shielding it from Malkin, and feeds Jamie McGinn right in front of the net. He sends it home past Fleury. Coach Bylsma decides to use his timeout. Pens 3, Sharks 36:13:
There's been just one 5-on-4 power play called this game and it was the Sharks who got it. Pens have not been awarded a man-advantage situation yet. 10:49:
Big power forward Ryane Clowe whips a hard backhander past Fleury top shelf. No. 29 scoring on No. 29. Pens 3, Sharks 212:08:
Flower has had to come up big for his team these last few minutes as the Sharks are getting some decent chances. They now hold a 26-25 advantage in shots after being down 15-4 at one point.NOTE:
A surprising amount of Pens connections to San Jose. Asst. coach and all-around awesome human being Tony Granato played the final 5 seasons of his NHL career with SJS from 1996-01; ROOT SPORTS color analyst Bob Errey served as Sharks captain from 1993-95 and everyone's favorite person Billy Guerin spent the 2006-07 season in a teal jersey. Check out these blasts from the past... 15:36: THIS JUST IN - Lovejoy has an upper-body injury and will not return.20:00:

saves on point-blank opportunities on that kill.6:08:
Pens heading to the PK as Orpik gets whistled for interference. Jaws theme music playing as Sharks get the first PP of the game. 10:23:
Nice quick passing play and some net-front presence leads to the Pens' third goal! Sully slides over to Letang who touches it right to Geno. He shoots through a Neal screen and the rebound pops out, hits him in the skate and flies into the net! However, play is being reviewed to ensure there was no kicking motion - and it stands! Pens 3, Sharks 111:30:
Lots of icings these last few minutes by the Pens but they're finally able to clear. Sharks looking much, much better this period.15:12: Ben Lovejoy
heads to the Pens' dressing room after falling into the boards. Pens to rotate 5 D again for the time being. We'll keep you posted on his status. 17:23:
Patrick Marleau splits the D and snaps a puck that somehow finds its way through Fleury into the back of the net. He now has 8 goals and 13 points in 18 career games vs. Pitt. Pens 2, Sharks 119:54:
Just six seconds in, it'll be Ryane Clowe who now drops the gloves to get his team fired up - this time with Engelland.20:00:
Puck drops. Game on!
- Malkin and Sullivan each have two points (Geno: 1G-1A, Sully 2A)
- Malkin and Engelland's goals came in the first 2:04 minutes of the frame
- Pens are 6-0-2 this season when they score the opening goal
- Letang has skated a team-leading 9:24 minutes
That'll do it for a strong first from the Pens. They lead 2-0 on goals from Malkin and Engelland and are outshooting SJ 15-4.1:29:
Adams and Brad Winchester drop the gloves in the Sharks' D zone for a spirited bout. Winchester trying to get his team back in the game.5:53:
Engo having a heck of a game. Not only did he score his first goal of the season, but he's joining the rush - getting a mini-breakaway a couple minutes ago - and he's being physical, as he just crushed the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Thornton on the boards.8:36:
Good news - Niskanen back on the ice for the Pens! 10:21: NOTE -
D Niskanen is not on the bench for the Pens after getting up slowly from a hit sustained earlier in the period. Pitt currently rotating 5 blueliners. We'll keep you posted if we get any updates.11:56:
Neal rips a shot at the cage that hits Greiss' arm and nearly dribbles into the back of the net! His line with Malkin and Sullivan is looking fantastic so far tonight.13:20:
Sharks have ettled down a little bit and their crowd has recovering from that stunning start by the Pens, but Pittsburgh is definitely still looking fast and sharp and San Jose has yet to get a shot. 17:56:
Pens showing no signs of fatigue despite the time change as they're off to an incredible start!!! After a nice bit of cycling, Geno sends a puck to the paint that deflects off the skate of Brent Burns, who's battling with Neal for position, and into the back of the net!!! Sharks coach Todd McLellan opts to pull Niemi and replace him with backup Thomas Greiss. Pens 2, Sharks 019:38:
Geno picks up a puck in the offensive zone and slides it over to Engelland. He corrals it and fires it far side past Niemi! The Sharks goalie didn't have a stick on the play as he lost it poking a rebound away a little while before. Pens 1, Sharks 020:00:
Puck drops on this late-night tilt after a ceremony honoring Sharks captain Joe Thornton playing his 1,000th NHL game on Oct. 21. Congrats to 'Jumbo Joe.' Game on!
Letang is in. Staal, MacIntyre and Picard are out. The lines are as follows:
Fleury in goal. Antti Niemi between the pipes for the Sharks. He's 2-0-1 in his career vs. Pittsburgh with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage.
is not on the ice for warmups. We'll post the Pens' official lineup when we get it.
Hello everyone! Thanks to those of you who are tuning in to tonight’s blog, as it’s a much later start than normal since the Pens are on the West Coast. I don’t blame you if you can’t stay up for the whole game, it’s definitely a late one. We’ll have all of the coverage waiting for you on PittsburghPenguins.com in the morning!
Tonight the Pens are looking to end a seven-game losing streak in San Jose dating back to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 30, 1999. Pittsburgh is 0-8-1 overall since their last win in San Jose, a 5-2 victory on Oct. 22, 1997 – Ron Francis (1G-1A) and Jaromir Jagr (1G-2A) paced the Penguins that night, while Tom Barrasso stopped 20 shots for the win. The Sharks’ lineup that night included current Pens assistant coach Tony Granato and then-rookie Patrick Marleau – crazy!
The updates out of San Jose are
that Jordan Staal
and Kris Letang
will be game-time decisions while Marc-Andre Fleury
will start in net. Stay tuned to the blog and our Twitter (@PensInsideScoop
) for more.
So sometimes during the day I search for songs related to the team the Pens are playing when I do these blogs, and this morning I was looking for some suitable tunes about sharks. While there’s plenty of shark-related music out there, I came across this article on Spinner.com from earlier this summer
that piqued my interest.
According to the story, a charter boat operator in South Australia has been researching how music affects shark behavior and discovered that great white sharks become much calmer when listening to AC/DC – responding most to “You Shook Me All Night Long.” So in the spirit of quieting these Sharks, let’s start the blog with that song.
