On behalf of Mario Lemieux and the entire Penguins organization, I want to thank our fans for your incredible role in making the Winter Classic one of the greatest sporting events in the city’s history.
From the 12,000 people who skated on the community rink … to the 13,500 who attended the AHL/NCAA doubleheader … to the 10,000 who cheered at the alumni game and watched the Pens’ open practice … to the huge Pittsburgh contingent that helped jam Heinz Field for the Classic itself … and to all those around the country who watched on TV … we salute you, and are again humbled by your support.
Together, we made the week leading up to the Winter Classic a celebration of hockey in our city and our region.
And, as we battled the unpredictable elements, we all proved again the resilience and determination that makes our city great.
Moving the game to an 8 p.m. start created almost a surreal atmosphere, and the prime-time national TV audience got a breathtaking view of Pittsburgh.
We’re back to the business at hand now, with five games in eight nights, starting Wednesday. But we wanted to make sure we had one important message for our fans: Thanks for the memories.
Sincerely, David Morehouse
