PENGUINS 4, RANGERS 1
Horn sounds and this one is Facebook official. Malkin's two goals lead the way. 0:36:
Prust rolls over Fleury and the philosopher/writer will be assessed a penalty. 1:40:
Malkin scores an empty-netter for his second goal of the game seconds after Steppan is stoned by Fleury from the high slot. Pens 4, Rangers 12:05:
Orpik with a good stick to stop the Rangers from getting off a shot in the slot. Pens ice the puck. They'll take a timeout and get a rest. 2:41:
Fleury cuts down the angle and absorbs Anisimov's shot. Clock winding down. 5:23:
Pens kill off the penalty. Great work from Letang and Cooke on that kill. 7:25:
Niskanen gets called for hooking. Pens with a big PK coming up. 12:50:
Malkin steals a puck on the far wall. He pulls the puck around an sliding Rangers defender to get all alone on Lundqvist. He roofs a backhander. $$$$ Pens 3, Rangers 113:17:
Jeffrey with a chance atop the crease. Lundqvist makes the save. Battle ensues for the loose puck, but Pens can't find it to put in. 16:48:
Sullivan with a pretty pass from behind the net to set up Cooke on the doorstep. Cooke's shot is somehow stopped by Lundqvist. 17:37:
Park scores for Pittsburgh off a 3-on-1 rush. New York gets a few guys trapped in the offensive zone. Some pretty passes by Pittsburgh sets up Park from the far side. He goes short side and beats Lundqvist. Pens 2, Rangers 117:55:
Fleury doing a great job of staying tall even while dropping to the butterfly. Fleury manages to make a couple saves with his chest while on his knees. 20:00:
Puck drops. Game on. Third period underway. Who's going to be the hero?
- 14 Pens with a shot
- 4 hits for Kunitz
- Letang 16:25 thru 2 periods
The penalty is over, and so is the period. This game is tied 1-1 after 40 minutes. 2:14:
Neal knocks over a Ranger in a race for a loose puck. He'll sit in the penalty box. Pens PK gets after it. 3:21:
Gaborik gets off a shot that Martin blocks with his stick. The puck goes out of play. Fleury comes out to tap Martin in the calf. That's how French people say "thank you." Well, either that or "merci." 7:02:
On a non-hockey note, I'm told by the Twittersphere that the meaning of life is 42. I don't get it, but they seem convinced. Who am I to argue? If you're on Twitter, follow Meesh and I at @PensInsideScoop
Malkin with a semi-breakaway. He gets off a backhander, but Lundqvist makes the save. 8:32:
Gaborik has an entire empty net with Fleury caught up on the post. Gaborik tries to get the puck on net and overcuts the shot. Fleury franticly covers. 9:54: Michelle said Hagelin was a player to watch tonight.
He scores to make this a 1-1 game. Martin pinches and gets a shot. The Rangers counter quickely. Hagelin gets behind the Pens defense, takes a pass and sneaks a shot through the body of Fleury. Pens 1, Rangers 112:13:
Fleury with two quick stops on Brad Richards. First he uses strong positioning to get his shoulder pad on a high shot. Then sticks a pass/shot away with his stick. 12:25:
The intensity and passion in this game makes me think of a playoff game. Imagine a playoff series between these two clubs. It would be awesome stuff. 14:01:
Adams gets the puck atop the crease and has six hours of free space. Adams does more deking than he has all season before his shot is stopped by Lundqvist. That is probably the best scoring chance Adams has ever had in his NHL career. 14:48:
Penalty expires and we're back to 5-on-5 hockey, or even strength as it's called in Canada.17:27:
Letang and Dubinsky battling around the net. The Rangers forward falls and clips Letang in the face with his stick and receives a two-minute minor for it. Pens to the PP!20:00:
Puck drops to start the second. Game on!
- 16 hits a piece for each team in a physical game
- 11 different Pens registered a shot on goal
- Letang with 8:29 minutes and 1 shot
First period ends. Definitely a division battle as both teams playing with fire and angst. Pittsburgh with the 1-0 lead on Kunitz's goal. 0:28:
A dangerously loose puck bounces in the crease. Fleury is able to cover as Gaborik tries to find it. 2:30:
Engelland gets a shot on net from the near side off a rush play. Fitting since a nifty backpass from Engo behind his own net started the rush up ice. 4:19:
The Pens and Rangers are playing relentless in the offensive zone. The Rangers were having trouble getting the puck out of their end, and when they did the Pens quickly retrieved the puck in the neutral zone and got the puck right back into the attacking zone. Vice versa when the Rangers were coming at the Pens. 7:22:
The momentum was with the Pens early in the contest. It's shifted to New York as they've got Pittsburgh running around a bit (or skating around I guess).9:20:
The Rangers just had a wide open net. Letang and Fleury dive to get in the way. The puck goes off one of them and wide of the net. 10:12:
Boyle and Michalek discuss poetry in the corner after Boyle tries to decapitate Malkin (Geno slithers low to avoid the hit). Boyle and Michalek will sit two minutes each for unsportsmanlike conduct. 10:40:
Marc Staal gets a re-direct shot off a rush play for the Rangers. Fleury alertly gets the pad low to make the save. 11:04:
Tangradi and Bickel drop the gloves and helmets. Bickel lands the better of the blows, but gutsy stuff from Tangradi. He stood in there and took the shots, not backing down.11:52:
The Rangers can't get out of their own zone. Pittsburgh has an 8-0 edge in shots so far #SoFarSoGood15:10:
The Pens fourth line sets up three or four shots from the point and providing traffic in front. However, the pucks couldn't get through on the shots. But the line built some momentum and gets some solid offensive zone time. 16:44:
Kunitz burries a shot to give the Pens an early lead. Kunitz had the puck on the near wall and attracted two Rangers. Kunitz fed a pass to Martin. His shot was stopped by Lundqvist, but Kunitz picked up the rebound in the slot and buries a shot. Pens 1, Rangers 016:50:
Fedotenko wiffs on a great chance from the side of the cage. 17:15:
Park great work on the backcheck to breakup an odd-man rush pass. Snuffs out a great scoring chance for the Rangers. 18:40:
Letang on the ice for his first shift. Pens female fans are giddy. 19:52:
Steigerwald called the Pens pugilists. Solid vocab word. 20:00:
Puck drops. Game on. First period underway.
Here are the Pens lines for tonight's game.
Fleury starts in goal. Pens scratch Asham & Lovejoy.
Hola Pens peeps (that's Spanish for "Hello Penguins fans")! Tonight the Pens are in New York at the most famous venue in the world, Madison Square Garden. Pittsburgh trails the Rangers by 10 points in the Atlantic Division standings. If the Pens want to contend for the division crown (which they do) they'll have a lot of catching up to do, and there's no better way to start than with two points tonight.
Lots of news coming out of this today's morning skate. The big news being that Pens defenseman and team hair model Kris Letang will return to the lineup
(fangirls everywhere scream for joy). Letang and his mane have missed the last 21 games with a concussion/broken nose.
Unfortunately, Arron Asham
is experiencing concussion-like symptoms. For all the details from the morning skate
, Michelle Crechiolo has you covered. If you want to cheat sheet version, click below.
