0:00: Time expires and the Rangers escaped with a 4-1 victory.

1:35: Asham rips a slap shot that Lundqvist consumes.

3:31: Boyle just roofs another shot past Johnson. The Rangers pulling away. Rangers 4, Penguins 1

5:05: Anisimov just ripped a shot over Johnson's glove to extend the lead. Rangers 3, Penguins 1

6:19: The Pens appeared to tie the game at 2-2 when Malkin's shot sneaked into the net. But Dupuis was ruled for having interferred with goalkeeper. The fans are not pleased.

9:35: Just 15 seconds later the Rangers strike again. Frolov found a rebound in the slot and shot it into the goal. Rangers 2, Penguins 1

9:50: Christensen scores a power-play goal 20 seconds into the man-advantage. He skated down the near side and whippe a shot shortside. Penguins 1, Rangers 1

10:10: Cooke is being called for a penalty that both he and the Pens coaching staff doesn't agree with. Pens PK steps up to the plate. Cooke gets punished for having the name "Cooke" on the back of his jersey. As Trib Total Media's Rob Rossi just said, "He's the James Harrison of the NHL."

12:22: A brilliant save by Johnny!!!! Gaborik got the puck to Boyle, who was all alone on goal. But Johnson closed the pads to make the save. A little Zepplin in his honor.

13:13: Malkin makes a great move down the middle lane, but his shot goes just wide of the post.

16:02: Asham tries to stuff a puck in on a wraparound. Now he drops the gloves with Avery. Asham lands a heavy blow, but loses his balance and falls down. Asham > Avery.

18:04: Conner nearly had a breakaway, but the puck slid right by his stick.

18:44: Crosby finds Malkin in the far dot. Malkin's wrist shot is gloved.

20:00: 20 minutes to paydirt. Go!


Tonight marks the premiere of the first episode of HBO's "24/7 Pens-Caps: Road to the Winter Classic."

- Sean Avery is not awesome.
- Pens are outhitting the Rangers, 18-17
- The Rangers have blocked 14 shots

0:00: That's the end of the second period. Pittsburgh still up 1-0 and hold a 22-12 edge in shots. PS - Annie was flying on the ice during that intermission break!!!

1:15: Letang gets hit hard head-first into the boards. He slowly gets up and appears to be OK.

3:24: Penalty over. Malkin takes his frustrations out on his stick, smashing it in the runway before grabbing a replacement.

4:03: Kennedy was playing in front of the net on the man-advantage. Unfortunately, Lundqvist can see right overtop TK's head.

5:33: Sean Avery hits Talbot hard from behind. Talbot appears to be OK after hitting the boards. Cooke and Asham rush to Talbot's aid. Avery is going to the box. Pens PP.

8:50: Letang with a great defensive play to stop a possible breakaway for Drury.

12:24: Lundqvist with a good glove save on Kris Letang's shot from the midpoint. Cooke goes to the box for cross checking.

16:21: Rupp destroys Sauer. Kiss that glass.

17:55: Malkin and Crosby had a 2-on-1, but a Rangers defender blocked Malkin's pass attempt.

20:00: The second period is underway. Just heard that Callahan has a broken hand and will not return.


- Crosby and Malkin are awesome. Crosby set a new career long with a 20-game point streak
- Michalek quietly has a game-best 5 shots
- Pens leading in the faceoff circle, 12-4

0:00: Period end. Pens up, 1-0. Pens outshooting the blue shirts, 15-6.

12.4: This is what happens when Sid and Geno get going. Malkin carries the puck down the far wall and drops to Crosby. Two Rangers defenders jump on Crosby and leave Malkin all alone. Crosby fakes a shot and slides the puck to Geno, who went all alone to the goal. Malkin embarrassed Lundqvist with a Lemieux-esque move. Penguins 1, Rangers 0

0:38: The Pens nearly score. A shot popped in the air and fell in the crease. Cooke tried to hammer it in and a scrum ensued. Lundqvist stood strong.

1:05: Letang throws two big checks into Sean Avery. The crowd was pleased.

2:14: Michalek gets deep in the zone and lifts a shot that handcuffs Lundqvist, but he makes the save. The Rangers have spent the past minute in their zone.

3:52: Jeffrey gets some time on the power play for Pittsburgh. Malkin blasts a one-timer fromt the near circle, but Lundqvist makes the save. Power play over.

5:19: The Rangers just had a shorthanded 2-on-0. A blocked shot send NY the other way. Letang hustled back and forced a pass over to Dubinsky, who shot it wide.

5:50: Boyle goes to the box for holding. He feels shame.

6:20: Johnny makes a nother great save, standing tall on Frolov, who got in all alone with the netminder.

8:20: Penalty over. Full squads.

9:48: Johhny lookin' good on this PK. Big saves on Christensen and Del Zotto.

10:24: Letang gets called for tripping Anisimov. He dove and tried to sweep the puck with his stick. Unfortunately, Anisimov went down as well.

12:26: We've reached our first TV timeout and the Ice Crew is cleaning the ice. Today marks the return of the world's greatest Ice Crew girl in the world, Annie - my favorite. She had an accident a few games back and got hurt, but my No. 1 fave of all-time was removed from IR and is back to scooping up snow. I love that girl.

13:03: Some guy named Mario Lemieux played a scrimmage game earlier today. Maybe you heard of hiim. I guess he did pretty well.

15:04: Power play over. Back to full squads.

15:26: The Pens are using Matt Cooke in front of the net on the man-advantage in Kunitz's absence. A couple shots, but no scores yet.

17:16: The Pens are going on the power play. Malkin gets tripped by Girardi. Power Ball Power Play time.

18:51: Johnson with a split pad save on Brian Boyle. Welcome back Johnny!

20:00: And begin!

Brent Johnson is in goal for Pittsburgh, making his first start since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

7:02 PM: The Heinz Two-Minute Anticipation Countdown has just been activated! I have been anticipating its activation all day. Finally, peace of mind.

7:00 PM: Lots of news to kick off the blog. First of all, Chris Kunitz will not play tonight against the Rangers due to his injury. It is the second straight game that he's missed. Also, Ben Lovejoy will play in place of Deryk Engelland. Brent Johnson gets his first start in net since Nov. 27.
