The Pittsburgh Penguins, the National Hockey League and the Penguins Elite youth hockey program will host the inaugural NHL Youth Cup tournament Nov. 1-3 at three area rinks.
The event, presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods, will feature AAA youth programs affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals.
Three age groups will compete in Pittsburgh (1999, 2001 and 2003 birth years) and three others (2000, 2002, 2004) will compete in Philadelphia.
“We think it’s a great opportunity for young players in all six age groups to play in an elite-level tournament with other NHL-affiliated programs so early in the season,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Penguins Elite program, with generous support from the NHL, is proud to host three age groups and welcome them to Pittsburgh.”
Local games will be played at Bladerunners-Harmarville, the Pittsburgh Ice Arena (New Kensington) and Shadyside Academy.
Former Penguin Mark Recchi is assistant coach for the Penguins Elite 2001 team. Former Flyer Derian Hatcher is head coach of the Team Comcast (Philadelphia) 1999 team.
