The Pittsburgh Penguins today announced the return of the “Big Screen” for the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, starting with Game 1 Wednesday night against the New York Rangers (8 p.m.).
The large video board, presented by First Niagara, will be located near the Peoples Gate at CONSOL Energy Center (at the corner of 5th Avenue and Washington Place). It will be in operation for all home games of the first-round series against the Rangers.
In previous seasons, the video board had been located across Centre Avenue on the site of the former Civic Arena. But that site is currently under construction.
“Our original decision was that we wouldn’t be able to do it because of the construction, but interest in a Big Screen from our fans and Mayor Peduto was so overwhelming that we came up with this solution,” said David Morehouse, President and CEO of the Penguins. “We invite fans who don’t have tickets to join us here by watching Penguins playoff hockey on the Big Screen at the Peoples Gate. It is sure to add to the festive playoff atmosphere.”
The Big Screen will not be in operation for road games in the first round.
Buford’s Kitchen, located directly across from CONSOL Energy Center on Fifth Avenue, will be the official site of Penguins’ road game watch parties.
Among the on-site activities at Buford’s for all road games will be appearances by Iceburgh, the Penguins’ Ice Crew, Pens TV and the “Penguins Live” pre-game show with Josh Getzoff.
