Penn State Wins Consolation Game Over Ohio State in Three Rivers Classic

by Brooks Bratten / Pittsburgh Penguins

Ohio State’s Ryan Dzingel recorded a hat trick, but it wasn’t enough as Penn State bested the Buckeyes, 5-4, in the consolation game of the inaugural Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center.

Taylor Holstrom and Casey Bailey each netted a pair for PSU and McKees Rocks native Matthew Skoff made 36 saves in net for the Nittany Lions. PSU’s victory came in the first of many meetings between the two programs – both will join the Big Ten Conference next season.

Dzingel’s first goal came early in the opening frame, but the Nittany Lions scored three unanswered to close out the first period. PSU would add another before the second stanza concluded. Bailey’s second tally came with just nine seconds remaining in the second period on a tip from between the circles that found it’s way past OSU goaltender Collin Olson. Holstrom stuck for the second time just 21 seconds into the final period, while Dzingel’s third marker came shortly thereafter. Alex Szczechura tallied late for the Buckeyes with an extra attacker, but PSU fended off a late OSU surge. Penn State finished the tournament with a 1-1 record, while OSU finished winless on the weekend.
