Penguins SuperSkills Competition a Success

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins held their second annual SuperSkills Competition, presented by Alcoa, at Mellon Arena on Sunday, Nov. 23.

“My son (Dominic) had a great time and was thrilled to be named the overall Champion in the 9-10 age group,” Jamie Norris said. “It will be a memory that will stay with him forever. That’s what youth hockey is all about.”

Four age groups (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12) participated in such competitions as fastest skater, stick handling and most accurate passer and shooter. Each group used the ice for an hour and a half.

"Thank you and the Penguins for today," said the Hertzberg family, whose son Michael won four of a possible five competitions. "That was the first time Michael competed like that and he had a lot of fun, and learned a lot also."

Penguins defenseman Alex Goligoski handed out trophies and demonstrated his talents by hitting all four targets in the accuracy competition. He also visited children in the locker room and signed autographs.

“My son Wyatt competed in the 7- and 8-year-old category (on Sunday),” Ian George said. “I wanted to let you know how much he enjoyed the experience, especially meeting Alex Goligoski, who by the way was great with the kids.”

There were 56 different competitors in all, including three involving goalies. Every participant received a SuperSkills puck, Penguins calendar, Penguins ball cap and SuperSkills tee shirt.

“Richie had a great time,” Rich Doyle said of his son. “Thank you guys for putting this event together.”
