The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Ryan Shea to a one-year contract, it was announced today by President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas.

Shea, 26, is signed through the 2023-24 season and his contract carries an average annual value of $775,000.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound defenseman spent the 2022-23 season with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League. Last season Shea recorded seven goals, 21 assists, 28 points and plus-37 in 70 games and tacked on four assists in eight playoff games. His plus/minus led the entire AHL in 2022-23.

The Milton, Massachusetts native has played three seasons in the AHL with the Texas Stars to begin his professional career (2020-23). In 163 career AHL games, Shea recorded 10 goals, 56 assists, 66 points and a plus-20.

Prior to his professional debut, he played four seasons of collegiate hockey with Northeastern University of the NCAA from 2016-20. Shea tallied 78 points (10G-68A) in 149 career NCAA games. The left-handed defender served as Northeastern's alternate captain from 2021-22 and captain from '22-23. He was an NCAA Hockey East Champion in 2019.

In his first World Championship appearance with Team USA, Shea notched one assist in three games played en route to the bronze medal in 2021.

Shea was originally drafted in the fourth round (121st overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2015 NHL Draft.
