Penguins-Sabres In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

That's the game. The Penguins down the Sabres 3-1! The pen is indeed mightier than the sword!

Fleury was about to take a shot at the open cage all the way down the ice, but it was blocked by a Sabre!

The Sabres have pulled Ryan Miller!

James Neal almost added to his point total on the evening, as he received a pass and almost split the Sabres D, but they engaged him enough so he couldn't get the shot off.

After an icing on the Penguins, Bylsma called a timeout to give his players a rest.

Gerbe tried to push a puck toward the net, but Fleury reached to the side of the cage and froze the puck.

6:54: Letestu re-directs a Michalek shot past Miller for the score! Neal made a fantastic play to keep the puck in to jumpstart that eventual goal. Penguins 3, Sabres 1

7:27: Dupuis swats a puck at Miller, who gobbles it up for the save.

10:13: Sabres are back to full strength.

12:33: Aaand the Sabres are heading right back to the PK, as Chris Butler is getting two for cross-checking Kunitz.

12:36: Sabres back to full strength.

14:36: Gaustad is in the box for hi-sticking Flower. Pens on the PP!

14:50: Neal speeds down the right side of the ice and whips a shot at Miller, who catches it with a wheeling glove save.

17:23: Dupuis wheels into the Sabres zone flanked by his linemates, but they're whistled offsides.

20:00: Here we go!

While we wait for the third period to get underway, here's a little Pens-Sabres pumper video for you to enjoy:

- Kunitz has three shots and three hits
- Michalek has three blocked shots
- Letang leads with 19:06 of ice time

0:00: The first 40 minutes are in the books. Pens lead 2-1 and the Sabres have a 22-20 advantage in shots.

0:13: Pens back to full strength.

2:13: Pens just got whistled for too many men on the ice. TK will serve.

2:24: Cooke and Talbot speed down the ice 2-on-1. Talbot makes a drop pass to Dupuis, who is trailing the play. He gives it right back but Max can't corral it!

3:37: Sabres are back to full strength.

4:02: The Pens just came so close to scoring twice in a matter of seconds!!! First Kunitz got a couple of cracks on the doorstep, then Letestu had a wide-open net but the pass went into his skates!

4:22: Kovalev's blast from the half wall deflects perfectly off the back boards to the front of the net, but Miller immediately pounces on it.

5:37: After it's all sorted out, the Pens are getting a two-minute power play!

5:40: We've got a bit of a brawl erupting in front of the Pens bench. After Lovejoy checked Ennis into the boards, Paul Gaustad took exception and went after Lovejoy. The players on the ice then went to stand up for their respective teammates. The refs are sorting out the penalties now.

7:40: Pens back to full strength.

7:53: Jason Pominville nearly stuffs a pass into the net, but he's thwarted by Flower.

9:33: Kunitz actually got called on that last play for goaltender interference. Pens on the PK.

9:51: TK powers to the net and backhands a shot at Miller with Kunitz creating some traffic, but the Sabres goalie absorbs the puck.

12:06: Sabres are back to full strength.

14:06: Cody McCormick gets two for tripping. Pens on the PP!

15:18: Zbynek Michalek gets his first goal of the season and first as a Penguin on an absolute snipe from the point!!! He lined up a beauty of a pass from Neal and blasted it home! Penguins 2, Sabres 1

18:35: Engelland keeps the puck in and skates into the Sabres zone before backhanding a pass to Neal, who taps it past Miller for the score! Congrats to James on his first goal as a Penguin! Penguins 1, Sabres 1

19:34: Jordan Staal got a stick right in the mouth on the opening faceoff. He's sitting on the end of the bench while the trainers attend to him. He appears to be fine.

20:00: And they're off!

A little welcome back vid for Mr. Kovalev:

- Kunitz has skated for 4:38 of ice time
- He has two hits, one shot and one takeaway
- Letang leads the team with 9:53 of ice time
- Letestu is 5-of-7 in the faceoff dot

0:00: That'll do it for the first. The Sabres lead 1-0 and hold a 15-12 advantage in shots.

1:54: The Pens try their patented move - going forward off the faceoff - but Talbot just can't quite get a handle on the pass from Jeffrey.

2:56: Sabres are back to full strength.

3:43: Martin shoots and his blast gets tipped by Kunitz. The rebound pops into the crease, but the Pens can't get to it in time.

5:00: Adam is heading to the sin bin for elbowing. Pens get another crack at the PP.

6:48: Players pile up in front of the Pens net as a loose puck sits in the crease, but Pittsburgh is able to keep it out!

8:31: Sabres are back to full strength.

9:13: Ennis jumps out of the box and immediately gets a breakaway after the Sabres clear the puck right to him, but Flower comes up with a huge save!

10:37: Pens on the PP! And now they're going to have a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:24, as Montador is called for boarding Neal!

11:13: With 30 seconds left on Engelland's penalty, the Sabres get called for too many men. Tyler Ennis will serve it.

11:57: The Sabres got a great scoring chance just now, but Staal comes to the rescue and sweeps the puck out of danger.

12:43: Engelland's getting a pair for hi-sticking. Pens on the PK.

14:28: Mike Rupp gets hauled down as he tries to catch up to his own bank pass, but the Pens are still able to keep the puck hemmed in the Sabres zone.

It was a beautiful day in Pittsburgh today!

17:13: Rob Niedermayer gets his second goal of the season as he powers to the net, jukes backhand to forehand and shoves the puck in the net, knocking Flower's helmet off in the process. Sabres 1, Penguins 0

17:33: Luke Adam dishes a pass to Brad Boyes, who gets a point-blank shot at Fleury but Flower comes up with the stop.

18:02: So good to see Kunitz back on the ice for the first time in 13 games!

18:18: Kennedy whips a shot at Miller that the Sabres goalie gloves with a wheeling save.

19:28: Martin with a nice poke check to strip a Sabre of the puck and get the Pens heading down the ice.

20:00: Game on!

7:00 PM: Kunitz is in!!!

Here's the Pens lines:

Fleury gets the nod between the pipes. Ryan Miller is in goal for the Sabres.

6:45 PM: The boys are back in town! It feels like forever since we've been here. The last time the team played at CONSOL Energy Center, James Neal and Matt Niskanen were playing their first games as Penguins and general manager Ray Shero had yet to acquire Alex Kovalev from the Ottawa Senators. What a difference a few weeks make! It's going to be awesome to see Kovy back in front of the Penguins fans.

The Pens are preparing to take on Buffalo, a team they've performed well against this year thus far. Pittsburgh has won all three of the teams' previous meetings so far this season, and is looking to capture a series sweep tonight. But the Sabres are surging, and it's sure to be a tough contest tonight. So we'll find out if the pen really is mightier than the sword.
