The Penguins held an optional skate at CONSOL Energy Center Thursday afternoon. Eleven players took part: Dustin Jeffrey; Matt D’Agostini; Craig Adams; James Neal; Beau Bennett; Deryk Engelland; Robert Bortuzzo; Olli Maatta; Paul Martin; Jeff Zatkoff; and Marc-Andre Fleury.
Of all the players on the ice for the Penguins' optional skate, Martin is the most notable. The defenseman missed the team's past two games with a lower-body injury.
“Paul Martin was back on the ice today and practiced in the optional practice,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “We saw him in battle drills and skating. He looked pretty good.”
Martin has skated on his own since Tuesday. As for his status for Friday night’s game against the Nashville Predators, Bylsma said "I am optimistic that he is possible to return."
The Pens re-assigned forward Jayson Megna to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League this morning.
Megna played in six NHL games with Pittsburgh, scoring two goals and three points. He scored his first NHL goal against Justin Peters and the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 28.
