The Penguins will make two important decisions on the possible return of defenseman Sergei Gonchar and/or forward Ruslan Fedotenko. Penguins head coach Michel Therrien wouldn’t verify if either will play Saturday in Toronto against the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre at 7 p.m.
“We’ll see,” Therrien said. “I can’t promise that they’re going to be there but they look good. We’ll make a decision, especially Gonchar, we’ll make a decision (Saturday).”
Gonchar hasn't nailed down a return date since being cleared by doctors to return to the lineup Wednesday. Gonchar, who has been removed from the IR list, said his status would be handled on a “day-by-day" basis.
Fedotenko was a little more forthcoming. The Ukraine native, who was cleared for contact Thursday, said he is planning on playing against the Maple Leafs but added that the ultimate decision will be made by the coaching staff.
“I believe so,” Fedotenko said on playing. “We need to double check with the coach and everything else. Hopefully, if (Saturday) morning I’m good to go then I’ll be in the lineup. If I’m not then maybe I’ll take an extra game off. We’ll see.”
