Penguins Report: Practice 10/26/10

by Sam Kasan / Pittsburgh Penguins

2:54 PM:

A couple quick points from head coach Dan Bylsma's post-practice media scrum (details below):
  • Arron Asham will make his Pens' debut Wednesday at Tampa Bay
  • The team is being cautious with Jordan Staal's return
  • Eric Godard missed practice with an illness

Coach Bylsma said that Arron Asham will play Wednesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"Arron Asham will be in the lineup," he said.

Bylsma added that the team is being cautious with Jordan Staal. Even though Staal has looked tremendous on the ice, the team still wants him to improve his strength and conditioning with off-ice training.

"We've said this every time we talk about Jordan's return, it's important to understand that he missed a significant amount of time working out," Bylsma said. "It's important for him to spend time getting some of that workout time in on the ice and off the ice. He looks good. There is still a ways to go before he gets close to that 100 percent range. He's got to be allowed to continue working off the ice and on. if he got into games too soon, he might lose some of that workout and strength. The work off the ice is important for him to get. I would like for Jordan to be in there tomorrow. He could probably go out there and look pretty good tomorrow. But we want to give him the appropriate amount of time off the ice for his conditioning and to get up to 100 percent.

"Day 1 he went on the ice, it was one of the best practices of the year by any player we had. ... We want to do what's best for his overall conditioning, his overall performance once he's ready to go."

Bylsma also said that Eric Godard missed Tuesday's practice with an illness and is expected to be out Wednesday as well.

The Pens moves with Tangradi and Hutchinson are a sign that the team is finally getting back to full health. Brooks Orpik looked strong in his return at St. Louis, Oct. 23. Forward Arron Asham is expected to be in the lineup Wednesday night against the Lightning.

The lines at Tuesday's practice:

1:01 PM:
The Pens made two roster moves Monday, sending left wing Eric Tangradi and defenseman Andrew Hutchinson to WBS.

12:45 PM:
The Pens are back on the ice Tuesday afternoon after having Monday off (technically the team still had a workout but did not skate). The team is practicing right now at St. Pete Times Forum. The only player not participating is Eric Godard. We'll get an update from coach Bylsma on his status.
