Penguins Report: Game Day at Carolina

by Sam Kasan / Pittsburgh Penguins

12:50 PM:
Around the locker room:

Dan Bylsma
On first game of a five-game road trip:
We talked about how we wanted to play in the last 20 games. I think this is a different segment of that. We played the four, and now we’re going on the road. Playing the same way is important. We’re playing a team that’s playing well, working hard and playing aggressive. We need to be ready to play tonight. We’ve talked about our consistency before the break against different opponents and whether it’s home or on the road. We need to get that consistency in our game. It’s a challenge for the five-game road trip, and against Carolina tonight.
On Carolina’s recent 8-1-1 streak:
When you play a team at this point in the season, you know their roster by heart as a coach. It wasn’t the case last night watching them play last night against Washington, and adjusting to some of their newer players. It’s different for our team looking at the lineup this morning on the board versus what we experienced earlier this year, or even last year.
On the third line:
We have a lot of guys in our lineup playing really well. Pascal Dupuis is playing the best hockey I’ve seen him play as a Pittsburgh Penguin. Mike Rupp is playing really well. Craig Adams is in a penalty killing role. He’s a big part of that, playing well physically right now. Maxime (Talbot) is getting back to being Max in terms of his work ethic, determination and tenacity on the ice. That’s creating a lot of competition on our team right now. We have that situation tonight with a healthy compliment of forwards, minus Eric Godard. Yes, there is movement in our lineup and throughout our lineup based on the fact that we have a lot of good players playing good hockey right now.

Sidney Crosby
On getting his equipment back:
I was happy. I wasn’t sure if it was misplaced or mistored, or whatever the case was. I’m just happy to get it back.
On if he’ll donate the equipment to the Hall of Fame:
I have no idea. If they want it I’m sure it will end up there. It would be pretty cool to have that there. I have no problem with that.

12:20 PM:
Goaltender Justin Peters will be net for Carolina in tonight's game. The rest of Carolina's lineup shakes out like this:

12:12 PM:

Sidney Crosby chats with Sergei Gonchar (left), while starting goalie Brent Johnson takes some shots (right)

Mike Rupp stretches (left); Bill Guerin, who will return to the lineup tonight, skates with head coach Dan Bylsma (right)

11:43 AM:
Head coach Dan Bylsma announced just minutes ago that backup netminder Brent Johnson will get the start tonight against the Hurricanes. Johnson has picked up wins in three straight decisions and five of his past seven. Overall he is 9-5 with a 2.60 goals-against average and .913 save percentage.

10:34 AM:

The Penguins have now hit the ice at RBC Center in Raleigh for their morning skate. Bill Guerin is participating and skating on the right side of his usual line with center Sidney Crosby and left winger Chris Kunitz. Here is what the rest of the lines looked like:

9:57 AM:

As the Penguins get set to take the ice for their 10:15 a.m. morning skate, we have some positive news to report on the injury front. Right winger Eric Godard, who has been out of the lineup since Jan. 25 with a groin injury, worked out with strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar prior to practice.
