The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled defenseman Noah Welch from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, it was announced Thursday by general manager Ray Shero.

Welch, 24, has played in 18 games this season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, recording five goals, 12 assists and 14 penalty minutes. He was voted as a starter for the PlanetUSA All-Star Team for the 2007 RBK Hockey AHL All-Star Classic, which will take place Jan. 28 and 29 at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. It is the second-straight year Welch has been selected as a starter for the event.

Welch has appeared in 18 games this season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  He has recorded one goal, one assist and 20 penalty minutes. 

The 6-foot-4, 218-pound native of Brighton, MA was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round (54th overall) of the 2001 Entry Draft.

Defenseman Josef Melichar suffered a leg injury in Wednesday's game in Florida. He will return to Pittsburgh for further evaluation.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Josef Melichar suffered a leg injury on Jan. 10 against the Florida Panthers. He will be returning to Pittsburgh on Thursday for further evaluation. Melichar has played in 42 games this season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, recording one goal, seven assists and 26 penalty minutes.
