Penguins-Rangers In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

0:00: The Rangers' winless skid is halted as they top the Pens by a score of 5-3 at Madison Square Garden.

1:04: Flower had to go back on the ice for a defensive zone faceoff, but he's back on the bench as the Pens clear the puck out.

1:34: The Pens have pulled Fleury for the extra attacker!

2:51: These last few minutes have been flying by. Lots of back-and-forth hockey and no whistles.

6:31: The Rangers successfully killed off that four-minute Pens PP.

8:31: We're in the second half of the Pens' four-minute PP. Pittsburgh is attacking hard, throwing puck after puck at Lundqvist, but they're not yet able to solve the Rangers' defense.

10:31: Michael Sauer just got a four-minute double minor for hi-sticking TK after he knocked his helmet off. Another four-minute PP for the Pens.

12:15: Letang wheels down the right side of the ice and blasts a puck at Lundqvist, who makes the stop.

14:48: Sterling, who's posted up in the slot, turns and floats a shot past Lundqvist, who's blocked by some great positioning by J. Staal. Rangers 5, Penguins 3

15:47: 1:46 remains on a holding penalty assessed to Callahan. Pens are on the PK.

16:17: Kennedy swoops a shot at Lundqvist that the netminder turns aside. Nice shift by TK, Dupuis and Craig.

18:03: J. Staal lays a huge hit on M. Staal in the Rangers end.

20:00: The final frame has commenced.

- The Rangers are now 3-for-6 on the power play
- Orpik leads the Pens with four hits
- Michalek has logged 15:41 of ice time

0:00: The first 40 minutes are in the books. The Rangers lead 5-2 and have a 26-20 advantage in shots.

1:04: Rangers back to full strength.

3:18: Pens on the PP as Talbot gets hi-sticked by Stepan.

4:37: Fleury makes the initial save on Callahan's odd-angle shot from the corner, but the rebound lands on the stick of Artem Anisimov, who slam-dunks the puck home. Rangers 5, Penguins 2

5:56: Then Flower makes another huge save with his right shoulder on Boyle from the circle! The rebound squirts into the slot and Goligoski is going to get two for tripping as he clears a Blueshirt out from the front of the net and away from the puck. Pens right back on the PK.

6:40: As the Pens are back to full strength, Fleury somehow stretches out and gets a piece of a shot by Brandon Prust that was headed into a wide-open net with his pad!

7:24: Huge save by Fleury on a shot and the ensuing rebound with 30 seconds left on the Pens' PK.

8:52: The Rangers still have 1:57 left on their PP.

8:56: Callahan rips a shot from the top of the circle that Fleury can't see around Dubinsky, who's planted in front. The puck travels in short side for Callahan's second of the day. Rangers 4, Penguins 2

10:20: Brett Sterling gets a four-minute double minor for hi-sticking. Pens on (a long) PK.

10:33: 3-on-1 opportunity for the Blueshirts off a Pens line change, but they can't solve Orpik's active stick and a squared-up Flower!

11:33: The Rangers get yet another great scoring chance on a re-direct, but Fleury comes out and challenges to smother the puck. Smart play by Flower.

13:32: A linesman is down in front of the Rangers bench and is being attended to by a New York trainer. Meanwhile, a scrum is forming down by the Pens net. The linesman seems to be okay as he drops the puck on the ensuing faceoff, and no penalties are being issued on the other events.

14:35: Tenacious play by the Sterling-Staal-Johnson line. They've been establishing a forecheck and controlling things down low for the majority of their shift.

16:45: Martin gets things cooking in the offensive zone by dipping low and working the puck. Ryan Craig covers him on the point.

18:26: Dubinsky backhands a pass to Vinny Prospal, who had been impatiently tapping his stick while waiting on the back door. He stuffs it home for the score. Rangers 3, Penguins 2

20:00: And they're off!

- The Rangers lead the NHL with 1,615 hits while the Pens are No. 2 with 1,593
- Goligoski leads with 8:37 of ice time
- Engelland's goal was his first since Dec. 4

0:00: A scrum ensues in the corner as time expires. The teams enter the first intermission tied 2-2 and the shots are even at 10 apiece.

0:40: Letang's shot rings off the post!!!

1:54: Conner and Tim Wallace collide on the blue line in the Rangers zone. Wallace gingerly skates off the ice.

2:25: Pens emerge out of that Rangers PP unscathed.

4:31: Two seconds after the Pens' four-minute PP expires, the Rangers will now head to the man-advantage as Dupuis gets a pair for tripping Boyle.

6:34: Two minutes left on the PP.

7:32: After a furious frenzy by the Rangers net, the Pens are whistled for a hand pass and the faceoff goes back into their end.

8:07: Pittsburgh's been clicking at a 42.1-percent clip (8-for-19) on the man-advantage over their past six road games.

8:34: Mike Rupp is down after getting clipped in the face by Brandon Dubinsky, who in addition to his hi-sticking minor is getting another minor for holding. Pens on a four-minute PP!

9:19: Prior to today, the Rangers scored one first-period goal over their past nine games while surrendering five.

10:40: With 1:01 left on their PP, the Rangers tie it up on another re-direct. Dan Girardi tees off a puck from the point that Ryan Callahan gets a stick on while blocking Fleury's line of vision. Penguins 2, Rangers 2

11:02: Staal with a great shorthanded opportunity that just misses the net!

11:40: Letang just got a pair for hooking. Pens on the PK.

14:17: After a timeout called by Rangers coach John Tortorella, Boyle gets his 19th of the season on a beauty of a re-direct on a shot from the point that flies under Fleury. Penguins 2, Rangers 1

14:54: Nick Johnson gets his first of the year! Right after he got out of the box, Dupuis chipped the puck up to a streaking Staal, who had a 2-on-1 opportunity with Johnson. Johnson flips it over Lundqvist and into the net. Penguins 2, Rangers 0

15:31: Derek Stepan gets a point-blank shot opportunity at Fleury, who gets a piece of it and deflects it out of danger!

17:02: Dupuis is in the box. Pens on the PK.

17:54: Conner undresses Lundqvist and tries to tuck the puck in the net but his shot slides through the crease. A Rangers blueliner clears the puck out -- right to the stick of Deryk Engelland, whose blast from the point flies into a wide-open net as Lundqvist was down! Penguins 1, Rangers 0

19:02: Marian Gaborik tries to stuff in a shot from the side of the net, but Fleury gets the pad down. I'm going with Gaborik as the Rangers' player to watch. He's got seven points (1G-6A) in his last seven games and seems poised for a goal-scoring explosion.

20:00: And they're off!

3:02 PM: Pens' lines for today's tilt at MSG:

Fleury gets the nod between the pipes. Henrik Lundqvist is in the cage for the Rangers.

2:55 PM: Very powerful statement from Penguins co-owner and Hall-of-Famer Mario Lemieux in the wake of the NHL's announced disciplinary action from Friday night's events on Long Island.

2:50 PM: The puck is about to drop for the Penguins' last game of the 2010-11 campaign at Madison Square Garden. Pittsburgh is looking to go a perfect 3-0 on the season at that historic building!

While we wait for the game to get underway, you've got to take a look at yesterday's Penguins Report to see the photos from the Pens' crazy cab adventure to their outdoor practice at Central Park. Fun-filled day in the Big Apple for the boys!
