Penguins prospect forwards Josh Archibald and Jake Guentzel – who both attend the University of Nebraska-Omaha – were honored as National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) players of the week.
Archibald was named offensive player of the week and Guentzel rookie of the week.
Archibald, who was drafted by the Penguins in the sixth round (174th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft, scored the overtime game-winning goal in back-to-back 3-2 defeats of the University of Denver both Friday and Saturday nights.
A 5-foot-10, 181-pound junior, Archibald factored into all three goals on Friday, collecting two helpers before notching his overtime winner. This season he leads the team with six goals and is tied for the team lead with 10 points.
Guentzel, Pittsburgh’s third-round (77th overall) selection in the 2013 NHL Draft, recorded four assists in two games last weekend – including both of Archibald’s game-winning tallies.
The Omaha, Nebraska native places third on the team – and first among NCHC freshmen – with seven points (2G-5A) this season. His five assists are tied for the conference lead among freshmen.
The University of Nebraska-Omaha is the same school that produced Pittsburgh rookie forward Jayson Megna.
