Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and the Pittsburgh Penguins today announced a rally in Market Square in Downtown Pittsburgh beginning at 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 30, to cheer on the Pens as they prepare for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic against the Washington Capitals at Heinz Field.
Mike Lange, Phil Bourque, and WDVE’s Val Porter will emcee the event and the Penguins will give away a pair of Winter Classic tickets to a lucky fan via a text message contest. Other fans will win overnight stays including breakfast at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa, tickets to the opening night of Mary Poppins and First Night Buttons from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, free admission to the North Park and South Park ice rinks, a Great Race gift bag, which includes a Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card and lift tickets to Seven Springs Mountain Resort.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Jimmy Adler and Norm Nardini, who will be opening for Bon Jovi in February. Iceburgh and members of the Pittsburgh Penguins Ice Crew presented by Highmark will be on hand to rally the crowd, as well as cheerleaders from Pittsburgh Brashear, Gateway, and Riverview high schools and the Riverview High School Marching Band. Face painters will also be present and fans can compete in a trivia contest.
Leading up to the NHL Winter Classic, the Mayor and County Executive will declare the week of December 26, “NHL Winter Classic Week” in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County and they are encouraging fans to show their Penguins pride by donning the team’s colors on Thursday.
In addition, the County Executive and Mayor are also asking those attending the rally to bring a canned good, non-perishable food item, or cash donation for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
