Penguins' Kielbasa Grinder Wins Aramark's Inaugural "Signature Sandwich Face-Off" at 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic

PITTSBURGH – Besides lending their support to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals, fans attending the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® this weekend also had a direct say in determining bragging rights for another contest: which signature sandwich paired best with hockey’s annual outdoor showcase. 


In a battle of sandwiches chosen by each team’s fans to represent their home ice, fans at Heinz Field selected CONSOL Energy Center’s Kielbasa Grinder as the inaugural winner of the “Signature Sandwich Face-Off.” With fans “voting” with their appetites, the competition began on New Year’s Eve at the NHL’s Spectator Plaza and continued inside Heinz Field during the Winter Classic. ARAMARK was the exclusive concessionaire for the NHL Winter Classic® and is the food and beverage partner for the Penguins and Capitals

The Kielbasa Grinder (thin-sliced local kielbasa, traditional sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing piled on a rustic Italian roll) outsold Verizon Center’s “The Fury” (chipotle-rubbed pulled pork, roasted poblano peppers and onions, topped with Monterey Jack cheese and a bacon adobo sauce heaped on a fresh-baked artisan roll), and was prepared by CONSOL Energy Center ARAMARK Executive Chef Carl VanWagner, who brought his culinary talents to Heinz Field along with his counterpart from Verizon Center, ARAMARK Executive Chef Dan Doyle.
