The Pittsburgh Penguins have invited 54 players (30 forwards; 18 defensemen; 6 goaltenders) to training camp, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Included are 21 players who were members of the Penguins’ Eastern Conference finals roster, headlined by captain Sidney Crosby, co-playoff team scoring leaders Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang and 2012-13 NHL First-Team All-Star left wing Chris Kunitz.
The Penguins also return NHL plus-minus leader Pascal Dupuis, the team’s regular-season goal-scoring leader James Neal, two-way blueliner Paul Martin, alternate captain Brooks Orpik and the goaltending tandem of Marc-Andre Fleury and Tomas Vokoun.
Other invitees who suited up for the Penguins last year are forwards Craig Adams, Beau Bennett, Tanner Glass, Dustin Jeffrey, Jussi Jokinen, Brandon Sutter and Joe Vitale; and defensemen Robert Bortuzzo, Simon Despres, Deryk Engelland and Matt Niskanen.
Two players – defenseman Rob Scuderi and forward Chris Conner – return for their second stint with Pittsburgh. Scuderi was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship squad, while Conner had the best NHL season of his career with Pittsburgh during the ’10-11 campaign.
Following Pittsburgh’s participation in the rookie tournament in London, Ontario, the team released seven forwards from their amateur tryout contracts - Cameron Brace, Richard Nejezchleb, Liam O’Brien, Connor Rankin, Carter Rowney, Scott Simmonds and Cody Sylvester.
Forward Jean-Sebastien Dea, who also participated in the rookie tournament, will attend training camp on an amateur tryout contract.
