Penguins In-Game Blog vs. Toronto

The Penguins have released their lineup for Friday's pre-season match-up with the Toronto Maple Leafs at Mellon Arena at 7:30 p.m.  (Buy Tickets)

Notable players that will participate are NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin, veteran Bill Guerin, defensemen Alex Goligoski, Kris Letang and Brooks Orpik and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

Malkin will center the top line between Kennedy and Caputi, while Fleury - who wanted a heavy workload in camp - will play his third game in four nights (starting against Columbus Tuesday and in the "Black and Gold Game" Thursday).

Below is the full lineup for this evening's game and the line combinations:




The contest will be the final pre-season game at Mellon Arena before the opening of the regular season and the raising of the Stanley Cup championship banner. Pittsburgh finishes the remainder of its pre-season schedule with four games on the road.

The game will air on the Penguins' flagship station WXDX 105.9 at 7:30 p.m. with Mike Lange and Phil Bourque calling the action. The contest will also be broadcast on 105.9 HD2 and streamed on, starting at with a one-hour pre-game show with Steve Mears, Grimm and Bob Grove.

7:00: Players from both teams take the ice for the pre-game skate.


7:15: The teams exit the rink so the ice can be resurfaced before the start of the game.

7:17: Iceburgh arrives to entertain the crowd.

7:28: AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" pumps up the crowd. The lights go down and the crowd cheers in anticipation.

7:32: The crowd chants "let's go Pens" as the team takes the ice. The arena horn releases a loud blast.

7:33: The starters stand on their blue lines as both "O' Canada" and "The Star Spangled Banner" are sung.


The puck is dropped and we're underway.

18:10: Toronto's Andy Rogers is penalized two minutes for delay of game. Malkin works the point on the power play.

16:10: The penalty expires.

15:21: Another Toronto penalty, this time to Jeff Finger for tripping.

14:24: Luca Caputi almost jams one in, standing right in front of the net. He is decked after the shot and a small melee insues.

13:17: Matt Cooke positions himself right in front of the Toronto net and tips in a Goligoski point shot just after the Leafs return to even strength. Kris Letang gets the second assist. Pens,1 Leafs, 0

12:10: Andy Rogers returns the the box to give Pittsburgh another power play.

10:10: The Leafs have killed the penalty.

9:10: Matt Cooke lays a solid hit on Jason Blake.

7:36: The Pens have been trapped in their defensive zone. The crowd chants "let's go Pens" to help them out.

6:36: Evgeni Malkin picks up a Cooke rebound and buries it. Tyler Kennedy get the other assist. Pens, 2 Leafs, 0

4:53: Yet another Pittsburgh power play. Toronto's John Mitchell gets two minutes for hooking.

2:55: Luca Caputi nearly scores on a tic-tac-toe play.

2:53: The Leafs killed the penalty, but the Pens sustained  good pressure in the Toronto zone.

0:00: The period ends with the Penguins leading 2-0. The shots were 10-3 in favor of Pittsburgh.


20:00: The second period begins.

17:34: A fight breaks out after a Craig-Adams hit. Pittsburgh's Nick Johnson goes up against Toronto's Andy Rogers. Rogers and Johnson get two-minute roughs. Adams get a five-minute elbow.

17:19: Toronto's Jason Blake picks up a bounce off the end boards and pushes it past Brent Johnson. Power-play goal. Pens 2, Leafs, 1

15:15: Maple Leaf Ian White blasts a shot from the point. It is re-directed before it gets past Johnson. Power-play goal for White.  Pens 2, Leafs 2

12:48: The Pens will be down two men down for 15 seconds, as Ben Lovejoy takes a two-minute hooking penalty.

12:34: Five on four.

12:28: Toronto's John Mitcchell rips a shot from the high slot past Johnson. Power-play goal. The teams are now at even strength. Leafs, 3 Pens 2

11:10: Pittsburgh's Tim Wallace lays out one of the Maple Leafs.

10:07: Mike Rupp now takes his turn decking a Leaf. The physical play is picking up, and the crowd is getting into it.

9:18: Marc-Andre Fleury enters the game to an incredible applause. A Fleury chant begins.

9:03: Goligoski takes a forearm to the face.

8:17: Caputi gets a good look at the net after a slick Malkin drop pass, but the shot is blocked.

6:41: Fleury makes an outstanding save.

5:52: A brawl breaks out after an open-ice hit. Malkin and Ian White both will both sit in the box. An extra minor goes to the Leafs White. Penguins power play.

5:47: Bill Guerin is called for a slash and evens things up.

3:52: A very brief Leafs power play.

3:47: Even strength.

3:33: A full-blown fight breaks out between Paul Bissonnette and Toronto's Rogers. Bissonnette takes Rogers down to the ice. Both are given five-minute majors.

3:23: Guerin will sit in the box two minutes for tripping.

1:34: Toronto's Jaraj Mikus fires a shot past a screened Fleury. Power-play goal. Leafs 4, Pens 2

0:00: The period ends with the Maple Leafs leading 4-2. The shots are now 19-14 in favor of the Pens.


20:00 The third period begins.

17:06 The Penguins will go on the penalty kill. Tim Wallace takes a two-minute slashing penalty.

16:53: Malkin takes a shift on the penalty kill.

15:29: Cooke nearly scores a shorthanded goal.

15:06: Even strength.

14:22: Toronto's Ian White gets two minutes for tripping. Penguins power play.

13:07: Nick Johnson swings behind the Toronto net and flicks a pass to the stick of Brooks Orpik. Orpik buries the shot. Konstantin Pushkarev gets the second assist. Power-play goal. Leafs, 4 Pens 3

12:21: The Pens will go on the power play again, as Jason Allison takes a two-minute penalty.

10:34: Tyler Kennedy is robbed of scoring a power-play goal.

10:21: Even strength.

9:25: Matt Cooke has a physical shift and throws his body around.

9:00: Ben Lovejoy puts the Penguins a man down for two minutes, a roughing call.

8:25: Toronto's Mikus is given two minutes for interference.

7:00: A short Penguins power play.

6:25: Even strength.

5:33: The crowd gets loud, chanting "let's go Pens."

4:43: Cooke lands another crushing blow, a solid hip check.

2:43: Tyler Kennedy uses his speed to generate an offensive chance.

0:46: Fleury is pulled.

0:31: Pittsburgh calls time out.

0:00: The Maple Leafs win 4-3. The final shot totals are 27-17, Pittsburgh.
