Penguins In-Game Blog vs. NY Rangers

Morning Skate Buzz
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who has been recovering from a tight groin, will be in the lineup when Pittsburgh opens the 2009-10 season against the New York Rangers at Mellon Arena at 7:30 p.m.

"It feels good," Crosby said. "No effects so I feel healthy."

Crosby's groin tightened on him during Pittsburgh's Sept. 25 pre-season contest in Columbus, forcing him to sit out the rest of the game. Crosby tested the goin on the ice for two days before returning to practice with his teammates on Tuesday. With three days of practice and a morning skate under his belt, Crosby said he's ready to suit up and start the season.

Marc-Andre Fleury will be in net for Pittsburgh

6:55: The teams take to the ice for the pre-game skate.

7:12: The players exit the ice.

The crowd is given a “two-minute warning” to get to their seats. The ceremony is about to begin.

The lights go down, and four giant screens unroll from four sides of the scoreboard. The screens form a column stretching from the ice to 60 feet above the rink surface. A movie following the Pens journey through the playoffs is displayed on the four-sided screen. The crowd goes nuts for the highlights.

After the video, the curtains drop to reveal the Stanley Cup at center ice. It is wheeled over to join the Art Ross Trophy, the Conne Smythe Trohy and the Prince of Wales Trophy.

The team, coaching staff and hockey operations crew is introduced. The players enter the ice one by one through the Zamboni door to the crowd’s excitement.

The banner is raised to the roof to a maniacal applause from the fans.


20:00: The puck drops, and the regular season has begun.

14:38: New York narrowly escapes a too-many-men penalty.

13:32: The Rangers' Chris Drury goes to the box, Penguins power play.

12:12: Evgeni Malkin tips in a Sergei Gonchar point shot, a power-play goal. The other assist goes to Alex Goligoski. Penguins, 1 Rangers, 0.

8:05: An intense, heavyweight fight breaks out between Eric Godard and Donald Brashear. The two trade hard punches in the drawn-out fight. Each player gets five minutes for fighting.

3:59: New York's Chris Drury deflects in a Christopher Higgins pass to even up the game. Penguins, 1 Rangers, 1.

2:58: Crosby is penalized two minutes for slashing Marc Staal.

2:36: Jordan Staal narrowly misses a short-handed chance.

0:58: Even strength.

0:00: The period ends with the game tied 1-1. The Peguins have the edge in shots 9-7.


20:00: The period begins.

17:06: Pascal Dupuis is denied on an excellent scoring chance.

16:44: Fleury makes an incredible glove save to squash a Rangers two-on-one opportunity.

15:03: Pascal Dupuis goes to the box, two minutes for hooking.

13:25: Fleury makes another great save, this time on a streaking Marian Gaborik.

13:03: Even strength.

8:38: Some more rough stuff involving Donald Brashear and Eric Godard breaks out behind the Rangers' net after Henrik Lundqvist freezes the puck.

7:35: Crosby fires in a Kris Letang feed. Penguins 2, Rangers 1.

6:27: Alex Goligoski puts a point shot past Lundqvist. Jordan Staal picks up the assist. Penguins 3, Rangers, 1.

3:13: Brooks Orpik gets two minutes for delay of game.

1:13: Orpik comes out of the box.

0:00: The period comes to an end with the Penguins leading 3-1. Pittsburgh also retains the shot advantage 21-19.


20:00: Play has started.

Scoring Change: The Goligoski goal has been credited to Tyler Kennedy, with assists by Goligoski and Staal.

15:59: Matt Cooke gets behind the Ranger defense. Lundqvist and Cooke both race toward the puck, with Lundqvist poking it away.

15:49: A Jordan Staal one-timer is stopped by Lundqvist.

14:04: New York's Marian Gaborik shoots in a bouncing puck. Penguins, 3 Rangers, 2.

13:20: New York penalty to Artem Anisimov for hooking, Penguins power play.

11:20: Even strength.

10:33: Brooks Orpik goes to the box, two minutes for interference.

8:48: Craig Adams gets a quality short-handed scoring opportunity.

8:33: The Penguins have killed another penalty.

5:38: Crosby nearly scores with one of his famous spin-around shots.

4:53: Craig Adams is robbed on the doorstep by Lundqvist.

1:11: The Rangers' net is empty.

0:00: The Penguins win 3-2. The final shots read 31-27, Pittsburgh.
