Penguins In-Game Blog vs. Columbus

Tonight marks the Penguins' first return to the ice since hoisting the Stanley Cup in Detroit on June 12th. The pre-season showdown with the Columbus Blue Jackets will feature a few players that were on the ice for that Cup-winning game, including captain Sidney Crosby, forwards Jordan Staal, Chris Kunitz, Pascal Dupuis and Ruslan Fedotenko, defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Mark Eaton and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Other notable players participating in the contest are newly signed blueliner Jay McKee, top prospect Eric Tangradi and 2009 first-round pick Simon Despres.

Tangradi has a chance to show what he can do playing alongside Crosby and Kunitz, while Despres will see action with the team's top blueliner in Gonchar.

7:14: Players from both teams have warmed up, and are now leaving the ice after the pre-game skate.

7:19: Iceburgh arrives on the ice to pump up the crowd, and to show off his dance moves while the ice is being resurfaced.

7:34: The lights go down, the theme music comes on. A giant "let's go Pens" chant starts. The Penguins take the ice to a roar of applause.

FIRST PERIOD

20:00:
The puck is dropped, and we're under way.

18:35: Fedotenko is penalized two minutes for boarding.

16:35: The Penguins kill the penalty.

12:50: Columbus penalty, Derek Dorsett. Two minutes for hooking.

Crosby, Kunitz, Tangradi, Despres and Gonchar make up the first power-play unit.

11:45: Tangradi hits the post.

11:38: Fedotenko is stopped on a breakaway.

10:50: The Pittsburgh power play is over.

10:41: A scrap breaks out after a solid Fleury save. Dorsett and Fedotenko mix it up.

10:24: A full-blown fight breaks out between Pittsburgh's Deryk Engelland and Doug Lynch. Engelland knocks Lynch down with a hard right, both will serve five-minute majors. Eric Goddard is also penalize two minutes. Penguins go on the penalty kill.

8:24: The Penguins kill the penalty.

8:08: Eric Goddard and Tom Sestito of Columbus drop the gloves. Five-minute majors to both players. The crowd is fired-up by the fight.

7:41: Tangradi levels the Blue Jackets' Jared Boll. Mathieu Roy of Columbus is given a two-minute penalty. Penguins power play.

5:41: The power play ends.

4:37: McKee takes a two-minute, high-sticking penalty. Crosby is out killing the penalty.

3:46 Jakub Voracek re-directs a shot into the net from Derick Brassard's stick, for a Columbus power-play goal. Pittsburgh-native R.J. Umberger gets the other assist.

2:02: Crosby is robbed, after a good Kunitz feed in front of the Columbus net.

0:00: First period concludes, with the Peguins trailing 1-0. Pittsburgh had 12 shots, Columbus had 9.

SECOND PERIOD

18:33: Fleury makes a spectacular save. Dave Engelland punches the rebound out of harm's way.

15:49: Dupuis narrowly misses a Fedotenko feed in front of the net.

9:34: Grant Clistone of Columbus takes a two-minute interference penalty. Penguins go on the power play.

7:43: Chris Conner hits the post, almost scoring Pittsburgh's first goal.

7:34: The power play ends.

5:55: Joe Vitale takes a two-minute hooking penalty. The penguins go on the penalty kill.

5:46: Kunitz ans Staal nearly connect on a short-handed 2 on 1.

4:39: Columbus power-play goal by Maksim Mayorov, assisted by Andrew Murray and Nikita Filatov.

4:11: The Blue Jacket's Jared Boll goes to the box for goaltender interference, a two-minute penalty.

2:28: Tangradi almost puts in a power-play goal, but just misses. He was positioned right in front of the net. The puck slid through the crease. He was tied up at the last minute, and unable to get a clean shot off.

0:14: Mayorov scores his second goal of the game to put Columbus up 3-0, assisted by Michael Blunden.

0:00: The period ends with the Penguins trailing 3-0. The shots are now 21-19, in favor of Pittsburgh.

THIRD PERIOD

18:55:
Dupuis just misses a Staal feed in front of the Columbus net.

17:03: Conner uses his speed to break free from the Columbus defense, and draws a penalty. Roy is given two minutes for hooking.

16:11: Tangradi knocks a puck to the ice with his hand, then feeds it to Sidney Crosby for the power-play goal. Sergei Gonchar gets the other assist.

13:11: Sidney Crosby scores his second goal of the night. Tangradi smacked the puck out of the  air, off the boards, and then it was wrapped in by Crosby. This is Tangradi's second assist of the night. The other assist went to Chris Kunitz.

12:30: Fedotenko and Dorsett have an altercation, both are given two-minute roughing penalties.

11:26: Kris Russel is called for a slash and given a two-minute penalty. The Penguins go on a 4 on 3 power play. Crosby and Gonchar work the point, with Staal positioned in front of the net.

10:30: Fedotenko and Dorsett are out of the box, 5 on 4 power play.

9:26: Even strength.

8:05: Staal is stopped on a semi-breakaway.

6:16: Pittsburgh goal scored by Chris Conner. Conner swung out wide from behind the net, and fired a sneaky, low shot in on goalie Dan LaCoste. New Penguin Jay McKee has the assist.

5:03: Pittsburgh is out-shooting Columbus 16-5 so far this period.

2:02: Columbus goal by Alexandre Picard. It was a wrap-around goal assisted by Murray, and Roy.

1:45: Pittsburgh strikes back. Chris Kunitz buries the rebound of a Mark Eaton shot from the point.

0:00: Regulation ends 4-4. The shots are 41-26, Pittsburgh. We're going to overtime.

OVERTIME

5:00: The 4 on 4 overtime begins.

4;16: Chris Kunitz blisters a shot over the left shoulder of LaCosta. Crosby make a great feed to Kunitz and nabbed the assist. The game ends, 5-4 Penguins. The final shot tally is 42-28, Pittsburgh.
