by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins

PITTSBURGH--Penguins' fans set a new record for community service on Friday, November 30 when the Penguins held their annual toy drive for the benefit of the U.S. Marines “Toys for Tots” program.

Fans were encouraged to bring unwrapped new toys to the game or to make a cash donation to help purchase toys for underprivileged children in the Pittsburgh area.

Penguins players’ wives and Booster Club members joined Marines at Mellon Arena gates for the collection.

The Penguins surpassed the amount of donations from all previous toy drives collecting over 1,600 toys and $4,770.  Fans making donations were eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia during the game.

Since 1992, Penguins fans have donated over 12,100 toys and $27,400 at the teams’ annual toy drives.
