The Pittsburgh Penguins hosted Hockey in the Hood head coach and program director Howard Smith and his youth team at Mellon Arena on Wednesday. The Hockey in the Hood team practiced on the same ice as the Penguins from 4 to 6 p.m.
Hockey in the Hood is an organization that is determined “to bring the sport of hockey to disadvantaged inner-city youths in order to teach and nurture the life principles of work ethic, discipline and teamwork,” according to the official website (www.hockeyinthehood.com
). “Although one of the goals is to field a competitive team, the primary goal is to teach the fundamentals of the sport to youths who would otherwise not have the opportunity to participate.”
