Penguins fans have come through again – this time earning the distinction of the being the best local fan base in the National Hockey League (NHL) according to Nielsen.
Researched compiled by Nielsen showed that 54% of the Pittsburgh market either attended a Penguins game in person at CONSOL Energy Center or watched or listened to a broadcast on television, radio or a mobile device in 2013.
The report was part of Nielsen’s annual “Year in Sports Media Report” for the 2013 calendar year.
Among NHL franchises, Pittsburgh was followed by the Buffalo Sabres (48%), Detroit Red Wings (45%), Boston Bruins (41%) and the St. Louis Blues (33%).
The top fan bases in other leagues were the Green Bay Packers of the NFL (88%), the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA (64%) and the St. Louis Cardinals of MLB (76%).
