Penguins-Devils In-Game Blog

by Michelle Crechiolo / Pittsburgh Penguins

0:00: That's game. The Devils shut out the Pens by a score of 2-0. The NHL's all-time leader in shutouts gets the 114th of his career.

0:42: Johnny's off!

1:29: Johnny's looking to the bench to see when he should come off to give the Pens the extra attacker.

4:16: Brodeur stones Asham, who has quite an underrated shot. Goligoski had blasted a shot into the Devils zone that bounced off the back boards to Asham.

7:02: Goligoski unleashes his cannon of a shot from the blue line, but Brodeur's able to make the stop.

9:46: Zubrus gets between Dupuis and the net at the last second to deflect No. 9's shot into the corner on what was almost a fantastic scoring chance.

11:36: Talbot and Tim Sestito are dropping the gloves by the Devils bench! Talbot has been playing unbelievable for the Pens tonight. Lots of heart from No. 25 out on the ice.

13:44: Staal gets a good chance on Brodeur, but he makes the save.

14:33: After Cooke laid him out in front of the Pens net, Jason Arnott retaliates by tripping him. Pens on their first PP of the evening.

17:54: Pens back to full strength.

18:56: Johnson smothers a Kovalchuk blast for the faceoff.

20:00: The final frame has begun, with the Devils on the PP for about 1:41.

- The Devils have now had four PPs while the Pens have had none.
- Talbot is killin' it on faceoffs!!! He's won 10-of-11 so far tonight.
- Staal leads Pens forwards with 12:52 of ice time.

0:00: That's it for the second. The Devils held onto their 2-0 lead and still hold the advantage in shots, 17-13.

0:16: Kunitz is the second Pen to get two penalties tonight, as he just got whistled for hooking. Pens will end the period on the PK.

1:20: The DJ is playing Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" on the arena speakers. I'm sure most of the Pens would rather hear Taylor Swift, as they usually choose the country sensation when we ask them "Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga?" for our Either Or feature in Ice Time.

2:24: Lovejoy's shot just misses the net!

3:30: Not sure if Brodeur is playing goalie or if he is actually the Devils' third defenseman. He just made yet another breakout pass, this time a home run to Rod Pelley on the Pens blue line.

4:25: Beautiful backhand pass to Asham from Jeffrey in the slot, but the Pens can't capitalize.

4:57: Tallinder's shot goes through Johnson but misses the net and goes into the corner!

6:38: Huge sequence of saves for Johnson! He gets a pad on a Devils re-direct, saves the ensuing rebound then pokes the puck away.

7:57: Ouch. Orpik just blocked a shot that looked like it stung.

9:02: The Devils are whistled for offsides, and Henrik Tallinder doesn't agree. "I'm not sure about that one, buddy," he said to the ref.

9:45: Nice work by Ben Lovejoy to join the rush, becoming a passing option for Pascal Dupuis. But Brodeur deflected his shot into the corner.

11:47: Dainius Zubrus uses his 6-foot-5, 225-pound frame to power to the front of the Pens net from behind the goal line to shovel a backhand at Johnson, but No. 1 comes up with the stop.

14:31: Pens back to full strength.

15:38: Cooke, Staal, Michalek and Orpik are out killing the penalty for the Pens.

16:32: Talbot is getting his second goaltender interference penalty of the night. Pens back on the PK.

16:39: Letang's centering pass goes to Dupuis planted in front, and Brodeur doesn't see No. 9's tip but the Devils manage to clear it out!

17:20: Letestu skates in on Brodeur and rips a shot off, but the Devils goalie makes the save.

18:40: Pens back to full strength.

20:00: They're off!

- Since Malkin arrived in Pittsburgh in 2006, the Pens had played 437 straight games with either him or Crosby in the lineup.
- Talbot has won 4-of-5 faceoffs.
- Orpik leads the team with 8:10 of ice time.

0:00: New Jersey will take a 2-0 lead into the second and will start the middle frame on the PP, as 44 seconds remain in Talbot's penalty. Shots are 9-5 in favor of the Devils.

1:16: Max Talbot carries the puck down shorthanded and turns and whips a backhand at Brodeur with Andy Greene all over him. They crash into Brodeur, and in an odd twist of events, Talbot is the one getting sent to the box for goaltender interference. Pens will go 5-on-3 for nine seconds.

2:33: Heads up! Kovalchuk's stick breaks and the blade goes flying over the protective netting and into the seats! Someone's going home with a pretty sweet souvenir.

3:09: Kunitz is going to the box for hooking. Pens on the PK.

4:03: Whew, huge defensive play by Letang to break up a 2-on-1 chance for the Devils. He gets low and lays his stick to the ice to deflect the backdoor pass harmlessly into the corner.

5:09: Lots of hustle from the line of Kunitz-Letestu-Dupuis on that last shift.

6:24: Travis Zajac's centering pass is broken up on a nice defensive play by Conner.

7:46: Lovejoy's shot from the point is deflected by Adams, but it hits the side of the net and bounces into the corner.

8:21: Lots of long-range shots at Johnny so far this period.

10:09: Nick Palmieri steals a puck behind the Pens net and wheels in front to backhand a shot past Johnson. Devils 2, Penguins 0

11:10: The Devils are pouncing on every Pens pass they can get their hands on. They get off two shots from intercepted passes, but Johnny comes up big both times.

13:10: Nice shift by the Rupp-Talbot-Conner line to keep the puck locked in the Devils zone.

15:45: Great active stick and defensive play by Ben Lovejoy, who gets between Patrik Elias and a wide-open Pens net and deflects the puck out of danger into the corner.

16:55: Martin Brodeur has jumpstarted the Devils' last three breakouts. The veteran goalie is being quite active behind his own net early.

18:38: The Devils get on the board early, as Brian Rolston rips a slapshot from the circle that goes in short side on Johnson. Devils 1, Penguins 0

20:00: They're off!

6:55 PM: The Pens' lines are slightly different than the ones they used at morning skate, with Letestu and Jeffrey switching spots. Lovejoy is in on defense:

6:45 PM: The Penguins are getting ready for their second tilt at the Prudential Center this season. Pittsburgh won the first time on Oct. 11 by a score of 3-1, with Brent Johnson getting the win between the pipes.

Tonight Johnny will get another chance for a victory in the Devils' house, as head coach Dan Bylsma announced this morning. He's dynamite on the road, with a 4-1-2 record, 1.42 goals-against average and .948 save percentage in opposing teams' arenas.

Peruse today's Pens Report for all of the day's happenings. There was plenty going on in the Garden State, mainly that the Pens' lines and the power play units experienced some shuffling with the two-headed monster that is Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin being out for tonight's game.

This marks the first time since the start of the 2006-07 season that both Crosby and Malkin have been out of the lineup at the same time.
