Penguins Cup Semifinals to be Played Wednesday, Thursday at Mellon Arena

The Penguins Cup semifinals, featuring the top teams in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), will be played Wednesday and Thursday at Mellon Arena.

On Wednesday, top-seeded Mars will take on Quaker Valley in Class A at 5 p.m.; top-seeded Greater Latrobe will meet Franklin Regional in Class AA at 7 p.m.; and top-seeded Shaler will face Mt. Lebanon in Class AAA at 9 p.m.

On Thursday, the matchups will be Serra Catholic-Bishop McCort in Class A at 5 p .m.; Bishop Canevin-Montour in Class AA at 7 p.m.; and Upper St. Clair-Seneca Valley in Class AAA at 9 p.m.

The winners will advance to play for the Penguins Cup in all three classifications next Monday and Tuesday, March 23 and 24, at Mellon Arena. For more information, please go to the PIHL’s website at


Varsity hockey players from Beaver, Blackhawk, Center and Quigley High Schools will compete in the Beaver County High School Hockey Showcase Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Beaver County Ice Arena, Brady’s Run Park. The event will celebrate the life  and memory of Freedom High School athlete John Challis, and the teams will be named Team Courage and Team Believe after John Challis’ motto: Courage + Believe = Life. Admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults.
