PENGUINS CUP SEMIFINALS BEGIN MONDAY AT ICE CASTLE

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League 84 Lumber Penguins Cup Championship Series moves to the semifinal round at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon starting Monday.

Two games will be played Monday (Class A), Tuesday (Class AA) and Wednesday (Class AAA) nights at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Monday’s first semifinal is a rematch of last year’s Class A Penguins Cup championship game as Bishop McCort (19-3-1) and Serra Catholic (20-2-1) tangle at 6:30 p.m.

Bishop McCort won last year’s game, 5-2. It broke a five-year streak of season-ending losses to the Eagles. Serra beat the Crimson Crushers three times (2000-02) in the Penguins Cup title game during that span, too.

In the nightcap, backyard rivals Quaker Valley (22-1-0) and Sewickley Academy (15-8-0) meet at 8:30 p.m.

The Quakers already own two victories over the Panthers this year. Quaker Valley posted a 5-2 win on Nov. 29 and followed it with an 8-1 triumph on Dec. 12.

All semifinal winners advance to the Penguins Cup championship games on Saturday, March 25, at Mellon Arena.
