In order to secure the Eastern Conference's fourth seed heading into the playoff, the Penguins (46-24-11, 103 points) must earn a win and hope Ottawa loses at Boston on Saturday night. Regardless, the Penguins and Senators will meet in the first round of the playoffs. A Penguins loss or an Ottawa win will clinch the No. 4 spot for the Senators.
Sidney Crosby owns a seven-point lead in the NHL scoring race with 118 points (36+82) in 78 games. San Jose's Joe Thornton is in second place with 111 points (21+90) in 81 games.
Evgeni Malkin leads all rookies in scoring with 85 points (33+52) in 77 games. Colorado's Paul Stastny is second with 76 points (27+49) in 80 games. Penguins winger Jordan Staal is sixth in rookie scoring with 42 points (29+13). He leads all NHL players with a 22.7 shooting percentage and seven short-handed goals, an NHL record for rookies.
