The Pittsburgh Penguins are proud to be part of a “Return Salute” television tribute honoring Pittsburgh police officer Steve Mitrisin, which debuts Wednesday at 10 p.m. on the Discovery Military Channel.
The inaugural “Return Salute” features three on-location stories of citizen-soldiers who are granted special wishes in return for sacrifices made in the service of their country. Mitrisin served for a year in Iraq, missing the birth of his son and, among other things, the Penguins’ Stanley Cup victory. Mitrisin’s wife, Kristin, also is a Pittsburgh police officer.
Mitrisin was the Penguins’ special guest at a practice in October, when he was surprised to be called onto the ice to meet the team by head coach Dan Bylsma. He also met team owner Mario Lemieux and received an autographed Penguins jersey. The next night, the Penguins’ honored him at a game against Phoenix at Mellon Arena.
