Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero announced Tuesday that the Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Gary Roberts from the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman Noah Welch.
Roberts is currently in his 19th NHL season and has registered 29 points (13 goals, 16 assists), along with 71 penalty minutes in 50 games with the Panthers this season. He has registered six multi-point games, including three-two goal efforts, while posting a plus-or-even rating in 36 of the 50 games he has skated in with the Panthers, posting a plus-five rating overall.
The 6-2, 215 lbs forward has registered 20-or-more goals in 12 of his 19 NHL seasons, including a career high 53 goals and 90 points for Calgary during his 1991-92 campaign. Roberts has been selected to play in the NHL All-Star Game on three occasions (1992, 1993, 2004) and was the NHL’s recipient of the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy following the 1995-96 season.
Roberts has amassed 875 points (424 goals, 451 assists), ranking 93rd on the NHL’s all time points list while ranking 104th all-time in the NHL skating in 1,137 career contests. His 424 goals currently rank 66th all-time in the NHL and he ranks 21st all-time on the NHL’s penalty minutes list with 2,467.
Roberts has also appeared in 114 playoff contests, registering 85 points (28 goals, 57 assists), along with 298 penalty minutes, capturing a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989. The native of North York, Ontario was originally selected in the first round (12th overall) by the Calgary Flames in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft.
