The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Nick Bonino in a three-team trade involving the San Jose Sharks and Montreal Canadiens, it was announced today by general manager Ron Hextall. Details of the trade are below:
Bonino, 34, is signed through the 2022-23 season and carries an average annual value of $2.05 million. Montreal is retaining 50% of the salary.

Bonino, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with Pittsburgh in 2016 and '17, is returning for his second tour of duty with the Penguins. The forward played with Pittsburgh from 2015-17 and recorded 27 goals, 39 assists and 66 points in 143 regular-season games. He played an integral part of the Penguins' back-to-back championships, recording eight goals, 17 assists and 25 points in 45 playoff games, including the series-clinching goal against the Washington Capitals in 2016.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound forward has skated in 59 games with the Sharks this season, recording 10 goals, nine assists and 19 points. This marks his seventh-straight season with 10-plus goals, and ninth overall. Bonino leads all Sharks forwards with 2:14 minutes of shorthanded time on ice per game, as well as 74 blocked shots on the season.
Bonino has skated in 820 career NHL games with San Jose, Minnesota, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Vancouver and Anaheim, and has recorded 158 goals, 195 assists, 353 points and is a plus-41. His best NHL season came in 2013-14 with Anaheim when he set career highs across the board with 22 goals, 27 assists and 49 points in 77 games.
The forward has played in 105 career playoff games and recorded 19 goals, 29 assists and 48 points. Throughout Pittsburgh's two championship runs, Bonino's 17 assists and 25 points ranked fourth on the team, including a team-leading 14 assists in 2016.
Prior to turning professional, Bonino played three seasons of collegiate hockey at Boston University. He recorded 45 goals, 72 assists and 117 points in 116 career games and won the National Championship with the Terriers in 2009.
The Hartford, Connecticut native has played in two World Championships with Team USA in 2015 and '18, winning the bronze medal at each tournament.
Bonino was originally drafted in the sixth round (173rd overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks.
