Pittsburgh Penguins forwards Patric Hornqvist and Carl Hagelin were named to the Team Sweden roster for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey to take place in Toronto this September.
Both players have been instrumental to Pittsburgh’s march to the Stanley Cup Final. Hagelin ranks fifth on the team with 12 points (5G-7A), and Hornqvist places second the club with seven goals and sixth with 11 points.
Hornqvist eclipsed the 50-point mark for the third-straight season this year, tallying 22 goals, 29 assists and 51 points in all 82 contests.
Hagelin joined the Penguins at midseason via a trade with the Anaheim Ducks and went on to produce 27 points (10G-17A) in 37 games with Pittsburgh as one-third of the ‘HBK Line’ with Phil Kessel and Nick Bonino. Hagelin’s season totals included careers highs with 25 assists and 39 points.
Hornqvist participated in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, scoring one goal in four games played. He also played in the 2012, ‘08, and ‘07 World Championships, posting eight goals and 12 points in 21 combined games.
In 2005, Hornqvist won a bronze medal for Sweden in the World Under-18 Championship, scoring a goal in seven games. Hornqvist also had three points (1G-2A) in seven games in his lone World Junior Championship appearance in 2007.
Hagelin most recently represented his native Sweden at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where he recorded two goals in six games on his way to a silver medal. He also participated in the 2008 World Junior Championship, where he appeared in six games and won a silver medal.
Hagelin tallied a goal and three assists for Sweden’s World Under-19 team in 2007.
