Matt Niskanen is making his case for one of the final positions on the Penguins’ roster this season. In the first preseason game against the Detroit Red Wings at CONSOL Energy Center, Niskanen scored a power-play goal in Pittsburgh’s 3-2 victory over Detroit.
“It was just a set play on the power play,” Niskanen said. “It was just a simple one-timer.
“It was the first exhibition game, its always kind of hectic. I tried to make an impression.”
The 24-year-old, 200-pound defenseman, who was acquired from the Dallas Stars towards the end of last season, is going through his first training camp and has been giving his all. According to head coach Dan Bylsma, tonight was proof of that.
“Matt’s had a very good camp,” Bylsma said. “He’s played very well in practice, scrimmage, and tonight I thought he played a good game.”
The battle amongst the defensemen for the final spots is fierce and Niskanen is not taking anything for granted.
“We’ve got a lot of depth in this organization on defense,” Niskanen said. “I’ll earn my spot on the team for playing time.”
