The Pittsburgh Penguins might have a youthful team, but it’s a pretty talented one.

That is evident in the selections for the 2007 NHL YoungStars game in Dallas on Jan. 23. Three of the 11 players on the Eastern Conference rosters are Penguins – Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Ryan Whitney.

The YoungStars Game will be telecast live on VERSUS in the United States and on CBC and RDS in Canada, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and followed immediately by the Dodge Nitro/NHL SuperSkills Competition.

Malkin made a spectacular start to his NHL career, becoming the first player in 89 years to tally goals in each of his first six NHL games. Before Malkin, only three players in NHL history had scored at least one goal in each of his first six (or more) games and all did so in 1917-18, the NHL’s inaugural season. Malkin leads the rookie scoring race with 41 points (20+21) in 38 games.

Staal, a center, and Whitney, a defenseman, join Malkin on the Eastern Conference squad. Staal, the second-overall pick in the 2006 Entry Draft, has tallied a league-leading five short-handed goals this season. Whitney, selected fifth overall in 2002, has 26 points (7+19) in 42 games.

YoungStars players were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, in consultation with league’s general managers.

The 2007 NHL All-Star Celebration, hosted by the American Airlines Center in Dallas, will feature live national broadcasts of the NHL YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck and Dodge Nitro/NHL SuperSkills event on Tuesday, Jan. 23, and the NHL All-Star Game on Wednesday, Jan. 24 on VERSUS in the United States and CBC and RDS in Canada starting at 8 p.m., ET. NASN, the NHL’s exclusive broadcast partner in Europe, will provide live to more than 25 countries and territories in Europe. NHL RADIO on Westwood One will provide exclusive, national radio coverage in the United States and Canada, while Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio each will provide radio play-by-play coverage.
