Evgeni Malkin took a much-deserved break from his rigorous summer workouts in Russia to party. Seriously.
Malkin celebrated his birthday with family and friends in Moscow Tuesday. Armed with a cake supporting lethal candles, Malkin ushered in his 26th year.
When he isn’t celebrating birthdays, Malkin spends his time training. Along with long-time friend and former teammate Sergei Gonchar, Malkin divides his time lifting weights, skating, swimming and working on stick skills.
For the second straight summer, Malkin is training under the guidance of Penguins strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar. Under Kadar’s tutelage last year, Malkin rehabbed from surgery, which repaired torn ligaments in his right knee.
Malkin went on to produce one of his best NHL seasons in 2011-12. He won the Hart (MVP), Ted Lindsay (outstanding player as voted by his peers) and Art Ross (scoring champion) Trophies. Malkin scored 50 goals for the first time in his career and claimed his second career scoring title with 109 points.
