Ron MacLean, host of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, a certified referee in the Canadian Hockey Association, will referee the second period of Friday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh.
MacLean will officiate with the NHL’s Senior Vice President and Director of Officiating Stephen Walkom. Earlier this month, MacLean attended the officials training camp in Fort Erie, Ontario.
“With all levels of hockey in the U.S. and Canada adopting our standard of rules enforcement this season, we thought that it was both important and appropriate that Ron experience the NHL rules standard directly from ice level rather than in his broadcast position,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “We hope that this experience on the ice will provide him and his audience a perspective that will benefit all constituents – players, coaches, officials and parents – as the positive changes in the game work their way through the grassroots level of hockey.
“We appreciate the support of both teams in this endeavor,” added Campbell.
