Lemieux Foundation Announces Plans for new Austin's Playroom at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins

The Mario Lemieux Foundation has announced plans for an Austin’s Playroom at the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.  An online auction at and texting campaign will provide funding for this new room supporting military families.

The featured item of the online auction, which ends on November 18, is a truly one of a kind piece, Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby’s locker room stalls from the Civic Arena.  In addition, this online auction features game-used items from the Nov. 10 Bruins v. Penguins game, as well unique NHL memorabilia.

The Austin’s Playroom will be housed in Tranquility Hall, on the new Walter Reed campus, which will support the Wounded Warrior program and provide services to warriors and their families.  This new 2,000 sq.ft. playroom will accommodate children from six weeks to 12 years of age and feature amenities such as a computer kiosk, art station, and imaginative play area.

The existing Walter Reed Army Medical Center has been closed and the existing National Naval Medical Center is being expanded and renovated so that all medical programs for all branches of military service will be housed on the Bethesda campus.  The new facility will be renamed the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and is scheduled to open September, 2011.

The Lemieux Foundation and Pittsburgh Penguins will honor veterans and Wounded Warriors at Wednesday's game.
